Hi, I am wondering what is best ammo to use for target training and such. I would like to buy ammo for self-defense , the better stuff and some cheaper for target practice. However, I want to avoid real crappy ammo that will jam my gun and make it dirty or cause it to malfunction, like I hear that some ammo, like Wolf/Prvi Partizan does.

Some People I see were sayign not to use military surplus ammo in a DPMS type of gun. However, with the price of ammo, what other options do I have for training?

I would like to buy some good ammo, like Hornaby, I suppose, to keep for self-defense purposes. However, I need a good ammo, that I can use day-to-day in target practice that will be reasonably priced.

For .223 ammo, I see one guy selling PMC ammo for .40/bullet which he claims is good. Another guy is selling Federal "Lake City" XM193ACS 223 55 gr for around .50/bullet which he claims is better than PMC and is not surplus. Would the XM193ACS work good as a general training ammunition? It is seems cheap enough and better quality than the surplus. How would it work in my gun? Or, should I only use higher grade ammo for training in these guns? I see other brands like Black Hills, Winchester, etc, but they are lot more money.

For .308 ammo, I see one guy selling Lithuanian surplus. He claims it is almost match grade and that it is most accurate surplus ammo you can still buy. Another store is selling RG British surplus ammo, which the other guy claims is inferior. I see one guy selling PMC .308 ammo for a cheaper price, which he claims is very good, it is not surplus. He then sells other more expensive brands like American Eagle, Winchester and Hornaby.

For .308 should I stick with these more expensive brands for target practice or can I get away with using the surplus ammo? If I clean my gun daily after each use will using surplus ammo, like Lithuanian or British RG ruin my gun?

Yes, I have also been told it depends on the gun, but I want to start my investment the right way. I am sure over time I can better for myself. So I really need other people's advice on best practice/plinking ammo to get for the two guns I mentioned.

Federal XM193 is some of the best 5.56mm you can buy. It's truly mil-spec (loaded hot). I keep mine statshed rather than shooting it up in practice because it isn't cheap.

I see a guy selling it for $0.53/bullet .. I haven't seen even the wolf ammo cheaper than this as of now. Should I stock up on this stuff? I was told to avoid the steel case cheap ammo. The guy is also selling PMC ammo for $0.40/bullet. What type of ammo do you use for plinking?

its a mater of accuracy in the end - every rifle has an ammo that works best for results you are seeking and most rifles will perform considerably diferent wityh diferant ammo than the one it works best with ,

if you are looking for accuracy on a competition level - no , if you are looking for miniute of man accuracy - yes , its all what you want to do

.308 ammo is real spendy.. I am thinking I will buy some surplus ammo for plinking. If you had to choose between one for a DPMS LR-308, which would you choose.. British RG Surplus or Lithuanian? I see one store selling the British slightly cheaper. I know I can also go with PMC which is bit more expensive.

I know am is going to get more and more spendy and less available. Even when inauguration day happens, I don't know what will happen to ammo prices. So, it will be hard for me with my busy schedule to spend a lot of time experimenting with the best ammo. I wanted to stock up on some decent stuff now.

I've used PMC ammo for years. There's nothing wrong with it, good, high quality ammo. Brass cases, etc.

If you can find it cheap, buy it.
