I bought a used Glock 17 at the local Carter's Country here in Houston. It was a First generation with no finger grooves and no rail. Overall the gun is tight and everything seems fine, I have other Glocks and the barrel has little wear marks. But the slide seems to be a rougher parkerized, dull finish. Compared to my newer Glocks which have a slight shine. Did I buy a police trade in or some sort of refurbished pistol? I was thinking that maybe the older Glocks were just made this way. Do I have to worry about rust now? I mean it is a Glock, and doesn't have a reputation as a fragile gun, so now what? Anybody know a good online source of magazines by the way? Pics coming soon.

It's fine. The older generation Glocks (Gen 1 and 2) had a different finish. I verified this myself on several Glock websites and FAQs I found after I bought a used G19 Gen 2 and the finish is much duller than my 3rd Gen G19. Your gun is fine, finish wise at least, that's the way the earlier versions were finished.

Have fun with that G17.

The old finish is parkerizing (phosphate) over tennifer.

The new finish is a teflon type coating over tennifer.

Cool, thanks for the quick reply. It makes more sense to have it dull finished since it is a combat weapon.

Does one finish hold up better than the other?
Don't know, all I know is the new finish is a lot slipperier than the old one. The old pre-rail Glocks with the old finish sure look a lot better to me.

The finish preference is a matter of choice. I happen to prefer the old style "rough" finish over the new style.

If you want your slide shinier, just polish it with some auto wax.
