Is my p3at defective?

I went to break in my kel tec p-3at today, and ran into a few problems. I was expecting some jams out of a brand new pocket gun, which I had a few of. The real worry for me came when my trigger stopped activating the hammer occasionally. The round would be in the chamber, block back and cocked, but when the trigger was pulled it was loose as if it wasn't cocked. If I cycled the action a time or two, it would function properly, but it happened several times. I put 100 rounds of quality ammo through it. Is this part of the break in period, or should I be sending this one back?

Just a quick question....did you clean it before you shot it? Did you try a little oil after cleaning or during the malfunction?

That's not an acceptable problem in a defensive gun. It might be simple to fix, perhaps just a bit of gunk or a metal shaving in the wrong place. If you do not feel comfortable taking it apart, hose it down with your favorite aerosol gun cleaner. If a good cleaning does not fix it, send it back.

I bet a little cleaning and oil on the disconnector fixes the problem.

Make sure you use a "plastic-safe" spray gun cleaner.

I don't own a P3AT but if you go the forum at www.ktog.org you will most likely find your answer. The folks over there are very knowledgeable about these guns.

Ok so in searching I found the answer. (hopefully) it turns out that the pin that goes down into the trigger had shifted downwards during the first few mags of shooting, making the trigger not reset like it should. After fully disasembling the gun, I was able to tap the pin back up into the trigger, and now it seems to be functioning properly. Hopefully it stays there, I would hate to have to do this very often.

I'm going to put another hundred rounds or so in this next weekend and ill post the results. I certainly am not comfortable carrying this one quite yet though.

You should put a drop of locktite on the pin before driving it back in.
