Found it!!

August 23, 2004 = STEEL CHALLENGE WINNER:

Tatsuya Sakai, a 33 year-old computer programmer from Kanagawa, Japan, won the STEEL CHALLENGE handgun competition and returns to his homeland, where private ownership of firearms is prohibited, ironically wearing the title of World Speed Shooting Champion. Sakai edged out defending champion K.C. Eusebio by .59 seconds. J.J. Racaza took third just .05 seconds behind Eusebio. Sakai, who trains using air-soft pistols until he arrives in the U.S., also claimed the Limited title.

Im going to change the original post slightly to add, if you train with Airsoft what training do you practice.
In my garage with an AS:

1.Drawing and firing while moving off the line of attack/fire (GOTX)
2.Low light
3.Point Shooting

In the back yard, FoF

I have access to private land where I can train these things with a real gun (except FOF:neener:), but not everyone does. I also don't have time to go there every day, but I can be shooting my AS gun in a matter of a few minutes almost any time.

FWIW, I personally don't find my work with a real gun degraded by AS practice.

Excellent for well designed FOF exercises. The goal of FOF is to understand situations as well as just shoot. If you engage in high end FOF, you probably have reasonable basic gun handling experience such that managing 9mm or 45 ACP, etc. semi recoil isn't a big deal for you. Thus, the lower recoil of the airsoft gun isn't even noticeable in the stress of the FOF exercise.

Also, they get rid of the damn evil birds in the backyard that poop on the patio.

...if you train with Airsoft what training do you practice. Once again thankyou everyone hope this thread continues to be useful.

The biggest thing I get out of airsoft is training on "seeing faster" during the draw, transitions, and splits, however, I use it for mag changes and entering firing positions as well.

One of the reasons fast and accurate shooters ARE fast and accurate is because they can "see" fast. This ability comes naturally, however, it is enhanced through training and practice. Through repetition, it becomes easier to recognize when your sight picture is "good enough", and you are able to send your shot down range at a faster rate. Repetition conditions your mind and body to immediately send that shot as soon as the recognized sight picture occurs. In competition, and defensive shooting, the elimination of even minor hesitation adds up big time.

If, through training, you condition yourself to "see" faster and drop even .1 of a second per shot on a 34 round course of fire, that would save you 3.4 seconds on that course of fire. 3.4 seconds is HUGE. In a 6 stage match, that time savings could add up to close to 20 seconds for the match. Again, HUGE amount of time.

Airsoft allows you to practice "seeing" faster pretty much anywhere, and at relatively no cost. I can get in 500 repetitions a night in my garage if I am so inclined. I couldn't do that with live ammo because of the cost. The visual conditioning that I can develop through repetition with airsoft, helps immensely when transitioning to live fire.

As pointed out, there's a high-level competitor in the Steel Challenge who lives in Japan. He has no opportunity to train with firearms and does all his training with airsoft.

He seems to do very well in terms of his shooting abilities BUT, I've seen him disqualified at least once (maybe twice) for unintentional discharges.

If you're going to practice with airsoft you need to be absolutely certain to maintain the same level of vigilance in terms of firearm safety that you would with firearms. Not because airsoft guns are dangerous but because you don't want to train yourself that the safety rules can be ignored.

Hello friends and neighbors / Any time spent sighting and firing on multiple targets is time well spent.

I have an airsoft Sig226, I did not see a CZ75B but practicing with the Sig is great. Racking the slide / mag changes / safety / good sights / whats not to like. Aquiring the target is good practice with any hand gun.

I also have .22 revolvers and a .22 semi-auto luger that IMHO aid my practice time tremendously as I could not afford to shoot half the rounds I do without them.

When I started shooting weak hand it was with bb guns. I now have indoor trap targets set up in my office area closet. I frequently shoot a SA/DA, adjustable sight, 10 shot, bb revolver like my S&W 617 6" .22 or S&W 586 6" .357. I also practice with a semi auto bb gun like my CZ75B, or one of the bb rifles. I would waste a lot of money jumping into weak hand shooting with .38, .40s&w, .30-30 or even .22, plus the fact I have to travel to the range more often. I'm a member there but this set up lets me practice anytime.

Air soft and bb guns are not like the real thing in weight or trigger pull but they can be close in sight radius, grip, safety and mag handleing. I tend to paint the plain black sights on all my handguns, weather real, airsoft or bb, with the same color fingernail polish to aid my memory in front sight aquisition .

So I would say air soft/ other type of practice is a definate plus.
good luck figuring out what works for you.

so there is a good bit of info on training with airsoft pistols. Ive learned a lot on the subject thankyou everyone :)

For folks in or close to TX, my buddy Karl Rehn was one of the pioneers in airsoft training and offers some great classes using them.

While they are certainly not as dangerous as real guns - they can sting and break the skin if you are just wearing a t-shirt and ambushed at close range with a full auto version . A nice lesson in a FOF exercise. You certainly need eye protection.

At Karl's we did a repeated exercise under stress - and found interestingly that even with a bunch of relatively competent shooters, we shot low and under bunches of welts at belt buckle level. We were pulling the trigger before getting a classic sight picture or mashing it in the melee.

So you learn something to correct!
