I can get a Polytech M14S at around $800, and also a Springfield M1A for about the same. Is one better than the other? I think that's a good price, but not sure which one to pick. I heard Polytech has good receiver, but is Springfield that much worse, considering it's made in the US?

The springfield is worth quite a bit more, stock. The receiver is forged on the Poly but everything else is of varying quality. the Springfield may or may not have some USGI parts. In any case, The Springfield in good/excellent condition is probably worth about a grand or $1100 IMO. At least around here.

$800 is a good price for a poly, IMO. Others may have varying opinions.

Great price on the Poly, grab it up!
Forged receiver, chrome lined barrel that's as good as USGI, forged 1-piece op rod
that's as good as TRW USGI, excellent - USGI like gas cylinders and trigger groups.
IMO, in the M14 world ~ there is no better value than the Chinese M14/S.

Been there, done that and I'll never buy another Springfield M1A, YRMV.

I've got both a Poly and a Springer.

The Chinese rifle is a bit cruder, and the recoil springs and original Chinese wood stock suck.

Put a GI stock and recoil spring on/in the Polytech, and it's just about as good as the M1A. Possibly better!

If I could buy a Poly or a Springer for $800 either one, I would definately get the Springfield. It carrys more value than the Chinese clone.

I say get the Poly.

Now where did you say there's a Springfield M1A for $800? Seriously . .where?

:)

Have a good one,
Dave

If the cost is about the same, get the Springfield Armory M1A.
It will always have more resale value.
Plus you will not be supporting our not so benevolent Mandarin overlords.

I have a poly and a springfield , both are great rifles . I'd get the springfield, not cuase its a better rifle than the poly, its that the springfield has a better resale value.

Get them both and keep the one that shoots better.
You should be able to sell the other one for more then
you paid for it,lowering the cost of your keeper.
But then again,I would wind up keeping both. :uhoh:

A Poly might have soft-bolt issues. You might have to change the bolt to USGI. That'd cost you a lot. I don't know the exact amount but it would be over $250.

Get the Poly and have it checked out for soft bolt disease. You can always replace the botl. BTW, also get the rear sight checked out to make sure that it isn't offset.

Polytech M14's have a few some non-USGI parts on them. If you are a tinkerer then get the Poly. The Springfield has a lifetime warranty.......good for a non tinkerer. The late Polytech M14S rifles are reputed to be the best Chinese M14 clones. I got a Poly off Gunbroker for $700 about 9 months ago. $800 is a good price now. I personally would get the M1A from Springfield. The warranty is nice.
