I am looking for a .22 handgun that has the same feel in my hand as full sized pistol like a XD or Glock. With the price of ammo today a .22 seems like a cheaper way to shoot.

I want the same slide release and mag release as I would find on my XD but I am not really interested in a conversion kit.

I have seen some threads on 1911s chambered in .22 and am considering that but I was curious if there was something else out there that I'm just not aware of.

I have also been looking for a .22lr pistol that looks like a modern semiauto (rather than a space blaster) and isn't made of zinc for quite some time now. The Walther P22 or the Sig Mosquito would meet my requirements quite nicely if the slides were made of steel. I would be very interested in any recommendations as well.

This will meet your "not a spaceblaster" (lol) requirement, Alec.
But it's not good for the OPs XD-style wishlist.

A GSG 1911.

This is my favorite .22 by far. It's a solid gun (unlike the older, previous attempts at a .22 1911), and fun-as-heck to shoot.

If this is up your alley, there are a couple recent threads lately where I and others have weighed in on this in more detail. Or let me know if you want me to repaste here.

does it have to be a dedicated .22lr?

Could always get a glock with a 22 conversion kit

As mentioned there is the ISSC which looks like the Glock.

Another option if looking for a full size gun is one of the Classic models from SIG. You can get a 220, 226, or 229 that comes in 22LR. A nice option with these is that you can order a centerfire top end kit for them.

If you are looking for a dedicated .22 pistol that feels and handles like a fullsize service pistol, but do not want an inexpensive (cheap) clone, you may be interested in a Beretta 87 or 87 Target. They ain't cheap but they shoot great and the grip is just like a Cougar / Cheetah.

Naahh .... HERE'S what you're after. The Sig P229 (compact), or P226 (Duty size) Classic 22 LR. Comes as a complete 22 cal pistol. Works perfectly with cheap Wal-Mart Remington ammo, and is a classic DA/SA with decocker -- no pulling the trigger ever except when firing.

After you are up to speed, you can get X-change kits for 9mm, .40 cal, and .357 Sig. All you do is change the slide and pop in the new mag -- takes less than 20 seconds.

Not terribly cheap, but a GREAT option.

I have a P22 and it is a lot smaller than a Glock or xd and things are in different locations. The advantage arms 22 conversion gives you a Glock that is a .22 but the aluminum slide is a lot lighter.

the same feel in my hand as full sized pistol like a XD or Glock

in my never-so-humble opinion the Glock and XD feel VERY different from one another. So much so that I got rid of my Glock and got an XD.

Would be glad to help but I really don't understand what are looking for.

Essentially I want a full sized handgun feel in a .22lr. I would prefer a DAO semi auto. I own a XD but want a cheaper alternative to plink with. The thing I want to avoid is that most 22 pistols I see the grip is at a different angle to the barrel then is on a tactical/duty pistol like a XD or Glock.

I went to a Dealer today held the Mosquito it was a bit smaller then I am looking for so the search continues.

Now I will have to find a dealer that has a p226 or CGC 1911.
Thanks for the input.

The reason that the slides on conversion kits are made of lighter material is that a .22 doesn't have enough power to cycle the slide reliably if it is steel.

I had the AA kit on my Glock, it made a light gun much lighter.

Some of the reasons we choose the guns we do, have to do with the availability of accessories. Glocks and 1911s have this cornered. You can prefer another gun, but the reality might be you won't be able to get all of the options you would otherwise.
