I'm wanting to buy a good .40 S&W and am considering either a Springfield XD tactical 5" or the Glock 22 and am curious if anyone has experience with both and which one they like better. I currently use a Glock 22 for work and am well familiar with it however there are a few things with it that I'm not to crazy about(i.e. the general feel and the sights). Just curious to see what else is out there and what you all have to say. I did a search and found a little on this but am curious to hear what everyone has to say about the .40 S&W. Yes the Glock is reliable and will shoot every time(always has for me) but I'd like to know if anyone has had this same great experiece with the XD. That is after all I think #1 Importance. However I'm still not 100% crazy about the Glock for a few small reasons. I've heard some great things about the XD and if its just as reliable as the glock then I'm thinking it'll be the winner. Also curious if any other good 40 S&W's are out there. I know 1911's are great but I like the safeties on the Glock and the XD as well as no external hammer. I want a "Keep It Simple Stupid" kinda weapon. Thanks

Based on my experience with my XD40, I'd buy the XD, its an awesome pistol all the way around, the 1911 style grip angle is a huge bonus in my opinion as well.

XD all the way, great guns, better point of aim, all around a great pistol.

I don't know if this is still the case or not but they use the same frame for the .357 sig, 9mm, and 40 S&W xd's. In the 9mm and 357 it is fine but in the 40 the slide can sometimes lock open prematurly. This is because the rounds can hit something with the slide lock and push it up. If you take the slide off and look in you will see a little think stickin out, that is it. The problem is easily solved by filing off just a hair. This may very well have been resolved and is far from a problem in all XD 40's, but I have heard talk of it happening in some of them and trimming the slide lock piece down always solved it. Just don't go to far or the slide wont lock back.

+1 XD
I don't have the 40, I have the .45. It feels nice and has a moderate kick. I like the fact that it has the grip safety. It is also a good pointer and feels balanced. Takedown is also fast and easy.

Love my 40XD with the $ saved you can get some of the extra's like night sights, thumbrest, light, spare mags, holster. and still not have spent as much as the Glock. No offense to Glock owners, but they are a bit pricey for what you get, kinda like an HK, no offense to HK owners,

Glock and HK owners can be a bit like 1911 owners in the belief that there "there can be only one" true gun. No offense to 1911 followers. I like to think Springfield has shaken things up a bit and combined some of the best of all worlds into one gun.

Now if I have offended enough people here I will move over to the computer forum and be the Mac zealot that I am and further my crusade against Micro$oft.

the 40 is right at the top of the gun I plan to buy myself when I turn 21 btw

not trying to turn you away with the problem mentioned above, just liek to throw everything in there when offering advice rather then just the great stuff and none of the potential problems.

I would choose glock for reasons like, its track record, ease of matinance, parts availibilty, better finish. Plus you are familar with it.

Though the XD's are sweet, but I've only handled the 9mm flavor. I'm sure you cant go wrong with either.

Glock vs. XD

Here's how it breaks down for me. Both are great, dependable pistols. Downsides to Glock- plastic sights; grip size & angle can be a problem for some. Downsides to XD- too narrow grip safety sometimes can be a problem if gripped hastily; trigger jobs are more expensive & invlove shipping the pistol off (Glock takes a $15- $20 3.5# connector replacement).

MCOSMAN...where are you buying your Glocks? Around here, the XD is about 50 dollars cheaper. I dont think $469 is expensive for a fine pistol. When the XD first came out they were a lot cheaper, but as popularity rises, so does the price.

As to the original post, both pistols are fine guns and will serve you well. I had a XD9 and the only downside I found on it was the finish. My stepdad has the XD40 and it is a great pistol. If you like the XD better than the Glock, get the XD. I learned on the Glock, and favor it over the Springer.

Just out of curiosity, how much does an XD cost??

To the original poster, it sounds like you already have a G22...or at least you said you use one for work. If you already have a G22 then I would probably recommend the XD just so you'd have something different...especially if you're unhappy with the G22.

I love Glocks but I don't really see the need in having two of the same gun.

I guess you are right, it has been a bit since I bought mine. At the time I was looking at a $200-250 difference. I seem to recall a $600 price tag on the Glock and a 400 on a stock XD at the time. I splurged and got the night sights on mine for an extra $50. Then came the tac Light @ $59, High cap mags 2 for 30.00, Fobus holster $35, Thumb rest for $12. Having a gun that hasn't failed to eject a round(1911) Pricless!!

Then to top it off my wife has claimed it to be hers. I used that as an excuse to buy the subcompact 40XD for ccw. That was more because they were hard to get ahold of at the time.

My brother just bought the .45acp XD and it came with holster and mags for $450.

My two cents.
