It's not on my immediate to buy list but I've wanted to get some of Remington's products, but I've heard quality control went down hill after the company was put under new management so newer models are to be avoided; but if I saw an older model that was a good find would I be able to tell?

Using the barrel stamp is usually accurate on rifles. Shotgun barrels are changed too much to be reliable. Just be aware that there was about a year and a half in the early 90's when they didn't use the barrel stamp. But even if it doesn't have one that will narrow it down.

If you're concerned about quality, look for another brand. They all have issues, it just depends on which issues you want to deal with.

Generally, the single letter prefix rifles are pre-takeover. No letter prefix are very early but not found often. I prefer to work with A or B prefix models.
