Is there anywhere to shoot in Salt Lake City that is accessible by public transit?

I'm spending this summer in Salt Lake City. I won't have a car available to me, but I would still like to enjoy the shooting sports while I'm here.

Does anybody know a good place in Salt Lake City that can be reached by the TRAX or local bus system, or if there is somewhere within walking distance of the Avenues?
 
No outdoor serviced by Trax or bus.
Buses go past a couple indoor ranges.
Nothing close to the Avenues, one on State Street & one on Redwood Road, both out in the Valley.

Would you mind giving me the names of these indoor ranges?
 
No problem, but the solution requires about a mile of hiking.

Use the UTA bus and/or FrontRunner to get yourself to the junction of Hwy 89 and 200 North in Kaysville. There is a big park and ride there.

On the east side of the highway, follow 200 North up the hill to Wahsatch Shooters. That's where the mile hike comes in. It's an outdoor range, open Friday 9-dusk, Saturday 9-5, and Sunday 11-4, plus Tuesday 5-dusk. Shoot all day for $10, or join the club for $60 and shoot all year.

I do not know what the laws are for people without a concealed carry permit, but a permit holder may legally carry on UTA, and Utah recognizes all state's permits.

Checked Mitch Vilos' book on Utah gun laws. Without a concealed carry permit, it is a felony to carry a firearm on UTA.

If the guns are locked up in a case AND have a trigger lock, would that be kosher?
 
Carrying a gun on UTA without a CFP, as of right now, is a felony as Denton mentioned above. It doesn't matter how it is encased, locked, or anything else. It doesn't just apply to firearms, but any "dangerous weapon" as defined by Utah law.

[(4) (a) A person who boards a bus with a concealed dangerous weapon or firearm
upon his person or effects is guilty of a third degree felony.]
[(b) The prohibition of Subsection (4)(a) does not apply to:]
[(i) individuals listed in Subsections 76-10-523(1)(a), (b), (c), (d), and (e);]
[(ii) a person licensed to carry a concealed weapon; or]
[(iii) persons in possession of weapons or firearms with the consent of the owner of the
bus or the owner's agent, or the lessee or bailee of the bus.]

The exclusions listed in (b) are (i) LEOs, et. al. (ii) Permitees and (iii) someone with permission of the bus owner/operator/etc.. Good luck with that one. There are no exclusions for encased firearms or anything else. There was a bill introduced in the last legislative session (HB 350) that changed it from a felony to a Class B misdemeanor (IIRC). It passed the House, but died in the Senate.

If you can find a ride, Lee-Kay is a nice place to shoot. It's owned by the DWR and has lots and lots of lanes. I've only shot there once, but it's a nice facility.

"Get Some" out on South State has an indoor range, bus goes right by.
"Doug's Shoot'n Sports" out on Redwood Road is another, bus goes right by.

As some have pointed out, there are some good indoor ranges in SLC that are close to public transportation. I don't know what the rates are, but one of the places I've frequented will rent you a handgun for $5. And if you get tired of that one, they will swap you for a different model.

So maybe your answer is to not take your own firearm, and just shoot what the commercial range will rent you.
 
There are other places to shoot, such as the Lee Kay at 6400 West just north of 2100 South, Hendricksen up Parley's Canyon, and I think the Holliday Gun Club might still be open.

None are accessible by bus without a substantial walk.

Make friends with someone in the area who will gladly go shooting with you. Someone from Ogden would be good.

Go to Kent's Sports store up in the Ogden area and pay $10 for a range card.

Get your friend to take you to the range Kent's sponsors that's on the other side of North Ogden Pass and have a a blast
