breaking news, Salt Lake City shooting

What are you talking about????

"Hokkmike:
In PA, malls are on the list of places not protected by CCP's."

State of Pennsylvania does not have "mall prohibition" for CCW/CCP!

Court facilities, schools, and the usual Fed Locations only.

Maybe, maybe some malls are posted-------but concealed means concealed.

I've seen some places that had no carrying signs on the doors as you enter in PA, so it's probably a rule of the establishment and not a law.

By the way, if I recall where Lehigh Valley is, I think we'll be up that way this weekend. We're shooting at Bucks County in Doylestown.

Im also lead to understand that even if you are found to be carrying in PA in a place that is posted but not protected by law, that you are escorted out and if you dont leave then you get a trespassing or similar charge.

What's the deal with police and off duty carry? Do they need a CCW or is it an inherent privilege???

My brother is a cop in NY State, he can carry if he wants to and his dept wants him to...but...it is against dept policy to have a beer if you're packing.
My brother very rarely drinks but for some reason never carries off duty.
I've tried talking to him about it but for him a gun is this heavy thing he uses at work and he also wants to have a good excuse (no gun) for not getting involved in crime stopping off duty.

oh & a cop can carry in just about any jurisdiction but I think most have the option to carry , not that they are mandated to.

I am glad one was there to stop this skell who is going to be listed as a "child killed by a gun"

Big deal. Utah is still #45 in the nation in violent crime. This is news only because it so rarely happens there.

The police still aren't saying anything or IDing anyone yet. But as others have said, the off duty cop was from Ogden, which is two counties to the north, and it was his fortune to be there when it happened, not anything to do with the fact that he was a cop.

Trolley Square is one of my favorite parts of Salt Lake, now it will never be the same. I have been there many times, including several events I have assisted producing at the Hard Rock Cafe, and I was always carrying. This possibility was very distant in my mind.

It was already scheduled for extensive remodeling, hopefully it will help to renew and move on.

"big deal" so your saying who cares. This is nothing? It happen and it is a big deal. Sad to know that its when your 18 that your allowed to buy rifle / firearms.

It turns out that I know several of the responding officers, including some of the ones that shot the guy.

This one was bad. Bad guy was executing people at point blank range.

Good guys engaged him, pinned him, other good guys entered behind him and shot him a bunch.

However EVERY SINGLE cop I spoke with about this today said the same thing, they wished that somebody with a CCW had shot the guy first.

Rocky Anderson, mayor of Salt Lake City: "We need to start addressing the prevalence of guns..."
What's he going to do, ban shotguns?

I hope that's EXACTLY what he wants, and SAYS so.

I hope the typically apathetic, "Nobody needs a (insert type of gun here)!" hunters are paying attention.

If this is true, and I don't have any reason to believe it's not, I'd like to know more, maybe in a new thread or PM's, about Utah's LEO's and their overall feelings.

I have quit carrying here in Southern Utah for fear of LEO harassment or other entanglements. I have come to believe that most LEO's around here in such a low crime area look down upon CCW's, as if I'm trying to "act tough" in front of them.

Maybe I'll start carrying again, who knows. Salt Lake City is quite a big difference from Washington county (for those familiar with utah).

I am surprised that in a shall-issue state, no one on Trolley Square had a gun other than 1 ogden off duty cop.

To tell the truth I'm suprised this hasn't happend at Trolley Square before. It is actually in a really bad part of town. I used to live right on 7th and 7th (directly South of Trolley Square) and we had shootings in that neighborhood all the time. We had a shootout between cops and a banger right in our backyard. A half a block away is low income housing and the phone booth on the corner is occupied 24/7 with dealers. My roomate at the time used to score in the parking terrace in the rear of Trolley Square.

Trolley Square stores are pretty upscale and I would be way more suprised to find someone who did CCW shopping there.

Not a great neighborhood.

Posted: 12:32 PM- The 18-year-old man who shot and killed at least five people Monday night at Trolley Square has been identified as Solejman Talovic, a Bosnian refugee who lived in Salt Lake City.
Little additional information was released about Talovic.
The Bosnian community, which numbers about 3,000 in Utah, planned a press conference later this afternoon.
Talovic parked his car in the west parking lot and walked into the mall, encountering two people, whom he shot. Then he walked further into the mall and shot a woman, said Police Chief Chris Burbank.
He then walked to a gift shop and shot five people. He shot several other people before he was gunned down by an off-duty Ogden police officer assisted by four Salt Lake City police officers, Burbank said.
He had a backpack that carried numerous rounds of ammunition as well as a .38-caliber handgun, said the chief.
Police have no motive in the killing.

What makes you think that?

I would imagine that there were a few CFL holders present but they may well have been more interested in protecting their families and exiting the scene than abandoning their families and wandering through the mall looking for the shooter(s).

According to a statement just a bit ago by Chief Chris Burbank, 4 SLPD officers arrived on the scene within three minutes of the first 911 call and the shooter was dead in another three minutes. Pretty quick and effective response.

Pretty laid back

* April 27, 1999: Quinn Martinez entered Chevy's Fresh Mex Restaurant in Sandy searching for a phone. Told there was no phone for customers, Martinez, who was high on meth, fatally shot manager Jason Rasmussen and wounded Joshua Parker. Exiting the restaurant, he shot Peter Berg twice in the back, killing him. Martinez then ran toward Debbie Briggs and shot her in the face through her closed driver's side window.
* April 15, 1999: 70-year-old Sergei Babarin, with a history of mental illness, entered the LDS Church Family History Library, killing two people and wounding four others before he was gunned down by police.

As you can see it has been almost seven years since the last multiple shootings here in Utah. We enjoy a rather relaxed way of life.

As Car Knocker and Correia would both attest, we have a large percentage of CCWs to population but I think the lack of concern born by the lack of large events, such as happened last night, has given the CCWs a false sense of security. We Mormons also tend to be a little more trusting of our fellow human beings than in some areas of the country.

I am thinking that the events at Trolley Square may very well change things. Couple that with the rising number of carjackings recently and I wouldn't be surprised if most CCWs started packing again on a daily basis.

It was also reported in one of the news releases that there was a SLC police presence on scene within four minutes of the first 9-1-1 call. That is fast response.

Quote: Did Rebecca Peters pay this guy off too?

Nope. But did some of her buddies brainwash the shooters? I put nothing past the anti-gun lunatics, not even mass murder.

What about down here in St. George? I don't go north ever (except Cedar City)... at what point does a city become dangerous enough to carry as opposed to not?

If a city has NO crime, then it is probably safe to not carry. If there is ANY crime in which you could be a victim, then it is dangerous enough to carry. I can think of no city in which it is safer not to carry.

Nope. Home-grown, lame-duck, liberal mayor.

No, I'm talking about the shooters ... I'm still convinced that Rebecca Peters hired the Port Arthur shooter (and the guy that got the blame was just an innocent retarded guy).

"Solejman Talovic"

Does this sound like the name of someone belonging to The Religion Of Peace (tm)?

He's Bosnian ... so he could be anything ... including (and most likely) athiest
