Shoot-out at Trolley Square leaves five injured, up to 3 dead
The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 02/12/2007 07:13:40 PM MST

Posted: 7:14 PM- Several people were reportedly shot at Trolley Square shopping center Monday evening, with at least one suspect shot and killed, according to police radio traffic.
Shortly before 7 p.m., officers responded to reports of someone shooting a gun at the Salt Lake City mall.
One person was reportedly dead, shot in the head, in one of the mall's parking lot, according to the radio.
Later radio reports told of up to five people who had been shot, possibly three of them dead.
After police had shot dead the suspected shooter, police warned of a second shooter on the second floor of the mall.
With all available units dispatched to Trolley Square, police were going through the mall systematically, clearing out stores.
People were being evacuated through the north exits of the mall into the north parking lot.
Fire and ambulance crews were setting up a staging area at the corner of 600 South and 600 East.

I can hear the antis giggling already. I've been watching the news, and they're making a real circus out of it.

Both my daughters were there today, thankfully before this all happened. Just a bit freaked out.

This is prime example of why I carry. Maniacs are everywhere and you never know when they will pop up. This is so sad, what pushes people to this kind of act? It just boggles my mind!:banghead:

Committing suicide and taking innocent people with you. It's like suicide by cop: director's cut. It's been the rage for the past 10 years. Starts around Columbine... let's see, Eric and Dylan would be in their 20s now if they were still alive... so that would put the shooter in the same generation. Your life sucks, you want to kill yourself? Great, take other people who are happy with you. It's the ultimate in selfishness. It's not limited to gun crimes however. People used to crash cars into telephone polls, now they crash them into other cars. It's not a firearms issue, it's a psychological issue.

What a terrible tragedy. Here's hoping the families find some kind of peace soon.

On a more political note, I'm just hoping this nutjob didn't have a CFP. That'll push the bill about the U right through.

Rocky Anderson, mayor of Salt Lake City: "We need to start addressing the prevalence of guns..."

Prince Yamato, citizen of America: "We need start addressing the prevalence of mayors".

*snort*

Rocky is Utah's token leftist. I mean, don't get me wrong, Utah has the usual range of opinions on things like taxes, abortion, school funding, various state initiatives, etc.

But Rocky is a type that'd be more at home on the East Coast. Frankly, I'd have been surprised if he hadn't thrown his two little cents in on that one.

But...addressing the "prevalence" of pump shotguns in Utah isn't going to fly, no matter how hard Rocky might wish for it.

Given the ratio of carry permit holders in this state, I'm actually surprised that the active shooter wasn't put down by someone with a CCW. If anything, this tells me that MORE people need to carry, and that public places need armed security and/or a police presence.

local news here

are saying a cop engaged, I am making an online bet it was a ccw holder who first engaged the shooter, only the citizens thought he was a cop because he hit his target and had a clean cut type of look.

That is my bet...any takers?

Nightcrawler - AMEN to that!

I just got home from work and seen the teaser on the yahoo news website. As I read the write-up on the thing, I was thinking to myself how many people could have been saved the misery of this incident if someone had a CCW and was using it.

Yes, the antis are going to have a field day with this, doesn't matter whether he had a violence record going back to his 3rd birthday, they are going to say the GUN caused the crime, and the poor poor man who used it is just a victim of the society in which we live.

Best wishes to the survivors of this incident, and to the families of the fatalities that this madman caused.

A good guy with a gun stopped him stopped him.

More people need to carry. **** like this is why I carry every day. You just never know, you know?
Good guy's gun stopped him.

Rocky Anderson, mayor of Salt Lake City: "We need to start addressing the prevalence of guns..." Good guy's gun...

Yes. Let's ban concealed carry in Salt Lake City. That'll help, Rocky.

Stopped by CCW holder.

Exactly what I thought. The news reports all most all instances of a CCW holder as a "off duty" or "plainclothes" "police officer" whether they are or not. They hear armed good guy wearing normal clothes pulled out a gun and stopped the threat and they write that in the script. Whether it was a cop or another CCW holder, it was someone with a concealed weapon that stopped this guy. I am hoping it was a non officer myself and if anyone sees good clarification please post an update.

From Yahoo News:

An off-duty officer from Ogden was in the mall and involved in the shooting, said Ogden police Sgt. Blaine Clifford, who declined to release the officer's name.

The officer was not injured, but "I don't know anything more," Clifford said.

Err, I was hoping it was not one of the more qualified than everyone else group :banghead:

Regardless this is tragic and I am glad he was stopped before doing further damage. Five people besides the shooter were killed. The weapon was a shotgun. This would not be an ideal anti story because they are trying to start from an "assault weapon" perspective and work inwards adding more and more weapons including all semi autos to the list. A pump shotgun does not fit the bill just yet, and is the worst item to politicly attack as it is more of a "family" weapon used by hunters and even anti semi auto skeet shooters that buy into the anti handgun anti assault weapon BS.

He was an off-duty cop from out of town, might as well have been any other armed good guy.

Whether he's from Ogden or Duluth, it's the fact he was armed when not "being a cop" that matters.

The only difference between him and a CCW holder is that he happens to be a sworn officer. Since he was "off duty" there really is no difference between him and any other CCW. The point being that there was SOMEONE in position to engage this psychotic dirt-bag until the local cavalry arrived. Isn't that one of the "selling points" of CCW?

Mark my words, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson will attempt to make political hay out of this. He happens to be one of "Bloomberg's Mayors." Thank God he is not running for Mayor again, but it has been reported that he has higher goals in sight since the Demoncritters have taken back some ground on the Federal level.

What's the deal with police and off duty carry? Do they need a CCW or is it an inherent privilege???

Ya know, When the more pacifist/unaware/victims in waiting, on my wife's side of the family ask why do I need to carry a gun, I always answer "Do you ever read the newspaper or watch the news?":banghead:

I Concur

The loss of innocent victims who were just minding their own business, shopping for Valentine's Day or whatever, is a sad loss and waste of human lives. I concur that the antis, including the local mayor there, will likely try to make political hay of the situation callling for disarmed patrons only.

Yet the irony of the situation is that had there not been an armed person willing to intervene, many more would have died last night. This type of incident is exactly why I carry as well.

My prayers and condolences to the family members and friendes of the victims. May they rest in peace and may their families find a way to forgive this terrible crime and have peace themselves.

Yep, Rocky is going to try to use this as a political advantage -- which he does with everything that he possibly can.

More people need to carry. **** like this is why I carry every day. You just never know, you know?

EXACTLY. What I almost said in my earlier post was, "Where's a CCW holder when you need one?"

Like P95Carry says, "You can't make an appointment for an emergency."

In PA, malls are on the list of places not protected by CCP's. This news is a tragedy, for the deaths, trauma of the innocents, and peril of the officers, AND it will be used against us - you can be sure!
