If you hunt please answer the poll if you don't hunt please do not cast a vote. I am not talking about a walk in the woods just during the hunt. While hunting if you carry a pistol does the projectile in the pistol only contain lead? With more and more states requiring non lead projectiles for hunting whats in your pistol?

The only time I have heard of lead not being allowed is for hunting waterfowl over bodies of water with a shotgun.

...does the projectile in the pistol only contain lead?
No. Usually there is a bit of copper too... you know... the jacket. Even the lead bullets I handload are an alloy of other materials, and of course some bullet lube in the grooves. I think the only ammo I've ever shot, whose projectile(s) were ONLY lead, were maybe in some bird shot.

When I hunt deer/elk, my .357 is loaded with JHP.

The one time I went hunting as a teen, my gun didn't contain lead. My father's policy way back then was that it made no sense to poison your meat. I happen to agree. Sure, the bullets cost more, but they're usually premium quality anyway.

I don't know what California's laws say, but I wouldn't be surprised if they outlawed toxic primers too. Since I doubt they'd have an effect on the meat, I'd see that as going too far.

I'm not a bird hunter. But Deer and small game get LEAD. I get my lead checked every year, cast my own bullets, shoot several thousand rounds annually, and eat meat killed with lead.

my lead level last year was 6 on the scale- 20 is when you start having issues. I'll bet if I tumbled outside it would drop a few points as well. (and my level has been consistently low for 3 years now- since I started getting it checked)

I carry a 44 mag while hunting, loaded with 300 gr Privi partizan soft point. Thats a jacketed lead bullet. I've never had to 'fire a shot in anger' at a deer/elk but I'm capable with it.

Colorado demands you use an expanding bullet for hunting and has demands of ft/lbs of energy on all handguns used to hunt.
