Is this a good price on a Smith? Should I get it?

Saw a Model 10 at a shop. 3" bull barrel, round butt, Pachmayr grips. Appears to have been shot VERY little - EXCELLENT condition. The only flaw I could find was a tinge of surface rust on one side of the hammer - just part of the side and it was very, very light.

They wanted $385 for it. I thought that was high (they wouldn't come down in price). Is this high? Is this a common configuration?

They also had a model 65, 4", pinned and recessed in excellent condition. Also $485. This seemed high to me, too.

Any comments, advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

Both their prices sound way high to me but at least $100.00 each! (maybe more) These can be had for much less, so if you're not in any great hurry I'd look around a bit. In fact, the last Model 65 I bought went for $300.00, and that was the coveted 3" model. The 4" version I bought prior to that was slightly under $300.00 if I recall.

In my area -- SE PA -- those prices are way high. Are you located in a state with restrictive laws that drive up the price of used guns?

No, guns are not restrictive here - this gun shop is just owned/run by people that are very dim. Their prices are high on all their used stuff and when you ask them a question, it takes a minute for them to respond. They seem almost drugged, they are so slow and slow talking.

They have signs everywhere that says "Do Not Dry Fire Guns". They will not let you test a trigger. I looked at a .40 caliber pistol there one time and wanted to try the trigger and they said I couldn't - they said they didn't have any snap caps. Good grief. I usually don't even like to go in there, but had some time to kill today.

3" Model 10's are not exactly .45 Lugers but I've been looking for one long enough that even at $385 I would think about it. At $249 I might dislocate my elbow going for my wallet ;)

4" 65 for $485:neener:

Prices are high on both guns. I would pay about $250.00 for a model 10 in excellent condition. (I just bought a model 15, which is a model 10 with adjustable rear sight, in very good condition for $225.00. I bought it from a private party so it would've cost a little more at a gun shop.)

Oops! I posted that the 4" 65 was $485 - it was $385.

Sorry,
Steve

Even considering the fact that the 3" barrel is rare (so rare that I had not heard of it before), that seems pretty high to me.
