Is This REALLY Necessary ?

A good Comment from a EX LEO Who now teaches CCW (and Other) Classes and does Gunsmithing that I heard.

Someone asked him this same question and he asked them "Why do you carry?" they answered "Just in case" He Replied "Same Applies, You never know what will happen, when, or what you might need"

He also Recommended Carrying one spare mag with FMJ's just in case of the event of a psycho going on a rampage while wearing body armor.

My Motto "Plan for the Worst, Hope for the Best"

Big Boomer:

No worries on disclosing to LEO in TX. As a matter of fact, I recommend giving the license over any time you are asked for your driver's license, even though the law doesn't require you to if you are not carrying. I've done it quite a few times (city, county, and State DPS) and at no time did the officer ask to even see what I had. They have just asked "Do you have it with you?" and one time I was asked where. I actually see them relax some knowing that I have a CHL. It's even gotten me out of a traffic ticket. I think the quote was "Well, I know you're not a dirtbag if you have this so I'm giving you a warning. Have a nice day." and I said something like, "Yes, sir, officer. Thank you, officer. Have a great day, yourself."

Here is what DPS does. They say policy varies from department to department.

I'm not saying it doesn't or can't happen. I have just seen (from experience) that they do not disarm. That is, unless you are doing something that makes them nervous.

To stay within the confines of the thread, I always carry at least one extra mag. And, yes, Uncle Mikes does suck. I think every person new to carry tries that out for the cheap factor, then figures it's not worth the savings.

I think there are a couple of things in that incident that makes it different from what the CHL holder faces

In this case not really. They started shooting first because someone wasn't moving fast enough, fired several times, and missed. Would you wait and see if they decided they weren't going to shoot you.

First, unless there is some particular reason to get involved one, even an off duty LEO, should not get into a gunfight over a simple robbery against three armed BG.

I agree it doesn't make any sense for a LEO or CHL holder to get involved in a situation like that and be a good witness. But if the BGs start shooting at people you have to make up your mind.

It is always sad to learn of “one of our finest” getting shot or injured and I hope she made a full recovery. I bet she does not carry that revolver anymore. Do you know about that?

She recovered fully. I'm not sure what she did later on but I'll bet she went out and bought a Glock, SIG, or S&W semi-auto (NYPD was just adopting these at this time).

I also wonder if she would have had the time to reload the revolver anyway.

She may have had time. The fact is she didn't have a reload so couldn't.

Just fwiw, that won't help. Evaluate that person's other advice in accord.

Jorg, correct answer is Mountain Dew, or Snapple ice tea, peach.
Treo - do you "Need" a spare mag? Your call there. Do you have a briefcase or a spot in your desk/vehicle that you could stash one, against futute need? Not a perfect solution, but a good compromise.
Does your job require a jacket? a spare mag in your jacket pocket will allow you to have one, and the extra weight will keep the jacket from whipping around and exposing your carry. Just a few thoughts.

Dr. Pepper.

concidering how many lives are saved with a 5 shot revolver and how few are lost by running out of ammo, you'd probly be ok, but then again there is always a chance of being attacked by 12 gang bangers.

Carry a reload. After you neutralize the BG, reload. When/if his friends come for you, you're ready.

If you carry a semiauto, clearing a malfunction (double feed) becomes a nightmare in an active firefight...juggle the mag while racking the slide? no way, drop the mag and forget it exists, clear the malfunction and get the new mag in...fine motor skills go out the door in high stress situations, no need to have another item you have to juggle when the SHTF and you're already in serious trouble...and then your gun malfunctioned! Ugh.

Most revolvers are limited in capacity, so I would carry a reload for a revolver just because of the low capacity alone...

Hi GRIZ22,

Thanks for the reply. Somehow I missed that the BG had started shooting. In that case "all bets are off."

Glad she recovered, and I bet she is carrying a SA with at least one reload.

Regards,
Jerry

My question is do I really need to carry a spare magazine

Maybe you will and maybe you won't. But chances are, that if you will, you'll need it in a hurry.:)
