Why so ridiculous on EDC?

I just watched a small number of EDC videos on youtube and seriously where the crap do people put all that crap? 4 knives, 3 pens, wallet, fake wallet, swiss army knife, multi tool, notepad, combat tacticool belt, emergency first aid kit, backup magazine, backup gun, backup magazine for backup gun, 5th knife, brass knuckles, pokey stick thing that goes on keychain, etc ad nauseam. I'm not even mentioning the 5 or 6 flashlights they carry. I consider what I carry a bit much.

My personal carry gear is XD9sc, holster, wallet, keys, pen, pocket knife, Streamlight and phone. The end. Occasionally chapstick. I don't carry a spare mag (never needed to pull my gun, let alone reload it) Also why on earth do people carry "combat" knives? If you have reason to stab them you have reason to shoot them. I understand if that is all you have to defend yourself then fine go ahead but there is no need for carrying more than 2 knives on your person. There is one video that last more than 30 minutes and the guy has over 30 things on his person including 6 different knives, 3 flashlights and multiple pens.
When it's all said and done we can make fun of them and think it's unnecessary, but on the 1 in a million chance sh*t does hit the fan, they'll be laughing at you. The same points you're making about them is the exact points the antigun folks express about us feeling the need to carry a firearm that statistically we probably will never need or use thus is proof that we're all paranoid gun nuts.

I personally like to watch the EDC YouTube videos all the time. I like to see what other are carrying, why they're carrying it, and if what they're carrying might possibly be a better suited tool for my needs or something I might want to add to my EDC.

I can't believe this, guys! People are going on and on and ON about who carries what, right down to friggin' TOOTHPICKS!

And not ONE person has yet to list the single, most important item to carry to protect the most valuable gun they own!

WHERE, pray tell, are the condoms?

:D
I'm surprised that I've never heard of anyone (especially L.E.'s) EDCing ear protection.

I'm surprised that I've never heard of anyone EDCing ear protection.

I keep ear plugs and headphones (ear muffs?) in my car, and have ear plugs in my BOB, my GHB in my trunk, as well as in the small emergency/survival kit a have in the back-pack that I use as a carry-on when flying.
I don't normally have them in my pockets, but I always have several options very close at hand.

I don't believe anyone is advocating carrying NOTHING, the subject is about those that routinely drag around an absurd amount of stuff. I carry a fair amount of emergency/SHTF gear, (pistol, knife, cash, flashlight, sunscreen chapstick,), and have more stuff in my car, but I'm not walking around in full battle-rattle as though the sun might burn out in an instant and we'll all get immersed in total darkenss and zombie hordes.

That's my point. Depending on who you ask, you're routinely dragging around an absurd amount of stuff too. You're a scared paranoid gun nut. The same way you view these guys is exactly how others view us for carrying a gun and/or knife alone. When it's all said and done and if anything ever goes wrong, they'll be more prepared than you and I are; however, if nothing ever happens, no harm no foul.

Funny how the "better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it" retort that many in the gun culture use to defend EDCing a firearm all of a sudden gets thrown out the window when they too, just like the antis, see someone carrying more gear/weapons than they deem is necessary.

I think some people need to EDC a sense of humor or thicker skin... In the end it's an internet forum and you can do whatever you wanna do whether it's full battle rattle or stark naked.

I dont care what you carry, and I really dont care what anyone thinks about what I carry. Prepare youself for your situation and lifestlye and go forth in peace.

I do think that if you pack a gun around you need extra ammo too....remember the old Magnum PI 2 hour episode where Magnum gets in a fire-fight with the bad guys and as usual he just had his .45 stuffed in his pants with no extra mag..and he runs out of ammo and gets shot-up..ends up in the hospital in like 'critical' condition?....Well yeah..I always figured the moral to that story was bring extra ammo....

In real life though...I just carry a little pistol and an extra mag of ammo..plus my normal stuff(small knife, keys, wallet..etc)

In my location...a bolt-action rifle for predator shooting(I'm a farmer) is about all I might really need...folks are friendly here..trouble is easy to avoid...not to mention about everybody has a gun in Oklahoma and lots of folks open carry. If I forget my concealed carry piece in the morning...ain't likely I'm going to engage in a fire-fight. But then I might be packing a 629 .44mag...or a Glock 19...or a .270 Winchester(or a .22 pistol if I feel like plinking)

I would probably be considered complacent in some locations

Do we have to list everything?

Ok, keychain. One medium grade commercial security key for the house, all locks keyed alike. The blanks are not available at the typical residential big box or hardware stores. And it is NEVER loaned out to service workers.

Like a pair of jumper cables, you don't loan your key, you loan yourself. Otherwise, no go.

That means the keychain has one house key, one car key for mine, one for hers, on a carabiner clip I can secure to a loop when out in the field. Gas cap key? In the car. It's locked up, why carry it to lose it? Gun safe key? In the house, where it's locked up, secure.

Not on my keychain ever.

Workplace keys? Separate keychain carried only on the clock. Not at any other time. Only stored at home, not the car should it be ransacked.

Beginning to see a trend? Tacticool loadouts start with the fundamentals of tactical application. You don't increase your risk of loss or lower your security standards.

Wallet? OMG, why do people carry every receipt they have in a wallet? Most forms of paper receipts are chemically impregnated or heat sensitive and won't last a month in a warm humid wallet.

Nope. Critical ID only as mandatory per state. Driver's license, CCW license, maybe your FOID, military ID (good discounts these days,) and whatever club cards you actually frequent on a monthly basis. Only if they are photo ID laminated. Maybe a pizza discount card. Those little keychain bar code cards can be laminated together with clear packing tape and take up the space of just one card.

Cash, done. I keep a comb in my wallet, one of those plastic nitpickers, which really gets the trash out of your hair out in the field. And doesn't trigger a metal alarm.

15 gas station cards, 25 Mall merchant charge accounts, or a treasured ticket stub to the World Series, no. Why feed the troll who finds your wallet and keeps it?

Oh yes it can happen, the latest suburban style is to carry your wallet and cell phone in your hand. I collect them off the counter constantly and run outside to return them. I answer the phone when owners call looking for them.

Maybe not so much this crowd, but it's getting worse.

Flashlight? if you are over 45, you wouldn't be allowed duty in the crow's nest at sea. Older eyes lose their overall ability to see in darkness or at distance. Our rods and cones are aging and like the rest of you, they aren't what they used to be. A flashlight to see things in out of the way corners is necessary at my job.

Pocket knife, absolutely. And you could stare at it clipped in my pocket and ask to borrow it all you want, it's not for loan. Amazing the number of people who think they can ask instead of carry one, and who cluelessly use them as prybars and screwdrivers. What you will get is a direct question what you are working on, and then I find that tool at work.

My pocket knife? From my cold dead fingers. :neener: And that is the one you get to see, I might carry one for defensive purposes, too. Simply because I can. Free country.

I won't extend the tedium for those with reading comprehension challenges, the point is if you decide to carry it, think it thru. A lot of the stuff any guy has on him at any time is adopted casually with very little thought of the consequences. A lot of times it exposes them to more risk than it mitigates.

Well lets see, semi auto pistol in holster, keys with key chain flashlight, comb, phone "If I don't forget it", change purse "ya, I'm old", pocket knife "small".

Men's purse, with glucose test kit, insulin, syringe, morning pills "in case we go out for breakfast", evening pills "in case we go out for dinner", package of crackers & energy bar "in case sugar goes low", glucose tabs "in case sugar goes REALLY low", happy pills "in case pain gets unbearable", digital camera "simply because there's room.

How's that for a list, and everything is important except for the camera.

Ever had your sugar crash as in down to the 40's or 30's? If so you know what I mean.

There is my EDC.

The older you get, the more you need. The harder it gets to run and hide, the more you need to stand and fight.

Not me. The older I get, the more I realize how much garbage I've been lugging around for years that I will never need.

Do you want to know 'ridiculous'? Wait till you find yourself desperately in need of something you poo-pooed. You'll reevaluate before you leave home again - if you live to get home first.

Remember the old saying:"I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy"? I think, for some folks with what they feel necessary to carry, that the cop might be lighter! :D

Let's look at what you really need. your glasses, wallet, keys, and pistol. the rest is optional, although everyone has a phone, most carry a knife, and a lot have a spare mag. Anything more and you need a fanny pack, or cargo pants. To walk around with several lights kinves and magazines is really over doing it, although I did go through that phase myself at one point, but never more than one of anything. The likelihood of needing a light during the day is almost zero for the average guy, and other on your home protection gun, more than likely not necessary.
and to dress around all that stuff in hot climates is almost impossible without extreme discomfort.
Otherwise the need for a fanny pack is required, then your phone extra mags, tac light giant key fobs, etc can get tossed in there, and keep the gun out of it, using a pack as a distraction is a better idea. Pocket carry the pistol or iwb it and no one will suspect that your gun is not in the pack, and your pockets are empty except for a 9mm or xds in one of them.
Also you can keep a light and wallet of extra ammo, in the car. If you need a light to go into a basement or abandoned house, you have it in the vehicle, most of this stuff doesn't have to be on you, just near you, the most immediate thing you need is ID and gun.

"Mall ninja" comes to mind to me at the same time "SHEEPLE" does.

Both extremes and both over the top.

BUT if I had to choose between over prepared and no preps at all ----- guess which one I already CHOOSE .

Do as you choose,as so far its a free country.

But I am not carrying 2 guns or knives to supply ANYONE.

Your on your own, good luck never being in a "gun free zone" when the SHTF !

I agree. I watch for the same reasons. Some of these guys do in fact carry rediculaous items. Some of the guys are pretty sensible though. I get a kick out of watching either type of video.

I am currently considering upgrading from a small SAK to a small to medium sized Leatherman. Having a usable pliers handy at all times is intriguing. I haven't yet decided if I wanna lose the pen and good nail file of the SAK. Or carry both.

EDC or gear review videos will often bring something to my attention that I have not considered before. I just ignore or skip over the parts that dont pertain to my wants/needs.

Do you want to know 'ridiculous'? Wait till you find yourself desperately in need of something you poo-pooed. You'll reevaluate before you leave home again - if you live to get home first.

As I have said, if I find myself in a situation that was already beyond my control and I die as a result, that was what I call God's providence and it was my time.

Mmmm. Avoiding high-risk situations....

Like your own home even in small town gun friendly states? It happened to me and I thought never in a billion years...

When it's all said and done we can make fun of them and think it's unnecessary, but on the 1 in a million chance sh*t does hit the fan, WE'LL be laughing at you.

I fixed it for ya ;)

I carry a backpack daily with crap I pray I never need to use...ie Israeli bandage & tourniquet in my FAK.
I also carry things I use daily like bandanas & shemagh's for working in the sun (lawn care industry in FL) as well as my lunch & snacks. Good flashlight for those 6am mornings, leatherman bit cards, spare cash, meds, emergency cold packs that you break & get cold for heat related issues or sprains....etc etc.
I've even got one of those gaterade premade go juices that could even be used by someone that's diabetic like my coworker should his sugar become low (made w/sugar not saccharin)

I also keep silly things in my trunk like jumper cables, spare tire, lug wrench, jack, a few road flares, a few bottles of water, flashlight..etc etc.

So when someone asks me why I carry so much crap I smile & just say better to have it & not need it.

EDC, BABY!!!

why?

My best guess..... Rambo complex or Paranoid OCD.

I consider myself to be doing pretty well if I remember my daily 3.
1. wallet
2. car keys
3. snot rag

Ill echo whats been stated, as I carry what suits me. I have researched what other people carry in their go bag/bob for ideas. I would expect edc evolve over time. I try to keep it at a minimum of wallet, phone, knife, gun/holster, & keys with options being extra mag/speed strips, second knife, flashlight etc. My bug out bag and radio are always with me in whatever vehicle im in. Ive actually been coming in heavy with first aid & rescue gear these past two weeks with all the treacherous weather we've faced in the southeast. like the old motto goes, *be prepared*

I wish my Aunt was still with us. She passed on over 15 years ago. She would have made an extraordinary YouTube vid. She never saw the internet.

This is true:

Her "EDC gear" began with her purse, which weighed about 5 pds. and had a flask, 2-3 pounds of cosmetics and lotions, bottle of aspirins, throat losenges, various pills, a box of Kleenix( most wadded up), about a pound of keys, holy water, incense, a small flask of olive oil, crucifixes and a rosary or two, etc. etc. A pair of long scissors. Often a banana, cookies, jerky, etc.

In her pockets was always about 50 wadded up kleenixs, dog treats, nail file and a rosary. No matter what coat or sweater that stuff was in it.

Around her neck was a scapula, St. Christopher medallion, crucifix, and a pair of sharp scissors with a red cap on the tips. When I was a kid I asked her about the scissors. She made a stabbing motion. "The cops don't ask a woman about scissors," she told me.

She kept her wallet in her bra as she got older. In the wallet was a check book. Also about 30 wadded up kleenixs. A small Beretta, either 25 or 32 I don't recall. A rosary, a pen, a longish stainless nail file. "What else is in there?" I asked her some decades ago. "A tit", she told me.

I once saw her hit a malicious drunk in the face with a ham in a smorgasbord restaurant. He pushed my mother and my aunt grabbed the bone and meat off the counter and came to her defense. As they fought on the floor she took her shoe off and smacked him with the heel till folks broke it up.

She taught me to see the weapon in everyday things.

That there is a special term for this stuff seems odd. It's just stuff.

Your kidding me ? This is a joke not? I just saw this video and thought it was some kind of paranoid parody about some-one? My list pretty much in order of importance: 1911 ACP Condition #1 I can get the rest from here.
However, a knife, light, and toilet/baby wipes are always in my traveling kit as I'm not much good with a sore ass in the mountains, besides it makes a person cranky as hell.:fire:
