Is this rifle any good?

I've heard bad things about them, but my dad has one and it's had no problems whatsoever. I sighted it in for him and I'll say, it's very accurate. 1 1/2" groups consistently, when I'm on that is. It's just fine for the money.

They had issues with the bolts flying out and if you search, I'm sure you can find threads of people getting hurt with them. This is what scares me about it. Other than that issue they seem to have a pretty crappy trigger and most reports say groups are about 1.5" or so which is decent. However, for $100 more you can get a Savage Model 10 or 110 depending on the action, package rifle at Walmart that has the Accu Trigger which is great, has never had any safety issues so you won't have that thought in your head, and the ones I've seen have shot around .4-.5" groups with handloads and around .8" groups with Federal Power Shok and Winchester Power Point factory ammo. It also comes with a sling and a Simmons scope. Now the scope isn't the best, but seems to be okay to use until you can afford something better. IMO the Savage is a much much better buy and they are only $384 or $387 or something right in that price range at the Walmarts in our area. Plus it's easily upgradable.

Another good choice is the Marlin XL-7 or XS-7 which comes in right around $300 with no scope. It's also getting great reviews and seems to be a good choice.

Those are the two best deals in that price point imo. There is also a Weatherby Vanguard that our Walmart has on clearance for $400 with no scope and it gets good reviews too, but I still prefer the Savage.

That being said the biggest rifles to avoid in this price range are the Remington 770's and even the older 710's. Almost all of the other choices are better than those two, however, the Savage and Marlin are a lot more rifle for the money than the Mossberg.

Haven't seen the Mossberg. But I do own a Marlin XL7 in 30-06 and I love it. It has a great trigger. Savage gets great reviews also...Russ

There was a lawsuit involving the bolts flying apart and injuring shooters. The last I heard Mossberg won that suit and was not held liable.

I still wouldn't touch one. The rifle has been around for years under at least 3 different names. Even if the bolt does not hit you in the face, there are much better guns for about the same money.

a buddy of mine has one and says hes taken some deer and a fox with it, his is a .308 though. but he doesnt talk about accuracy, and i know howas can be good with a light barrel like my .308, though i wasnt too good with mine yet. so i got to work on my flinch and my scope zero

There was a few isolated incidences (3, I believe) where the pressed on bolt handle had come loose, and in one, the owner had disassembled the bolt himself and reassembled it incorrectly, so the rumor goes.
All bolt assemblies are now welded, and the early extractor problems have been corrected.
The Mossberg should be a good rifle for the money, the problem is the Marlin XL7 or XS7 is at least as good, if not a better deal for the money.

The T C Venture is a better rifle altogether, for a little more money, and is now being chambered in the 280 Remington, along with other great chamberings.

Compare it side-by-side with a marlin x7. They're both cheap rifles, but you will see that the mossburg is cheeper in every way. Go with a marlin, they're in the same price range, they have the same features and they already have a better reputation than the moss 100's.

wish more rifles came from the factory in .280 Remington...and .260 Remington. Heck Remington only has 3 or 4 rifles available in .280 and only the Model 7 available in .260 according to their website.

It's better than a Remington 770, but that's not saying much. A Marlin XS / XL 7 or a Stevens 200 would be a better gun for the money.

The Marlin XL7, Savage, or a Stevens would be what I would consider in that price range.
