Okay I know this is another one of those questions but here we go. I am interested in getting a big bore revo and basicly determaned from another thread that I should go with a .44 mag, but I just can't get the thought out of my head of getting a .45 colt instead.

So If I were to get a S&W mountain gun I know that I can not shoot the "ruger only" rounds, so is .45 colt any good as a "powerfull" big bore without the +p loads? The main purpose of the gun will be range fun and learning to reload, I will also like it to be a woods defense gun in black bear country.

I like the .45 colt far more than .44 magnum. The .45 will cost more, but you can load it quite a bit hotter than .44 magnum, if it so pleases you.

.45 Colt is a fantastic round for handloading.

Something to consider is to get a 4 or 5 1/2'' Ruger Redhawk and send it off to Dave Clements.(scroll down to double action section) $425 will get you a conversion to .45 Colt. Nice packable piece that will take the "Ruger only" loads.
