Guys,

I spied an excellent Ishapore 2a1 jungle carbine (maybe it was made by Gibbs, not sure) but it has a chrome bolt, 12 round 7.62 Nato mag, and 'Jungle Carbine' flash hider/bayonet lug. Chrome bore to.

Now are they good guns? I never cared for the No.1 'v' sight but this gun is in excellent shape.

Are they worth $299?

Thanks,

Sounds like a good price but not seeing it in person it's hard to tell. I would look on the online auction sites like gunbroker to see what similar ones might have sold for.

I own a 2a1 purchased for $150 about 15 years ago. I watched one sell for $400 eight months ago. It was standard with no chrome. The one you're talking about is very peculiar. I've never seen one with any chrome. Mine isn't a very accurate rifle, but the one you're talking about is priced right.

These rifles were made for the police in India. You can still see them on news reports. These are fine rifles. They were made so they would match the other. 308 used by India at the time, the FAL. They were not chromed that I know of. Maybe a honor guard rifle? I picked up 3 some years back & built it into a hunter, until it was taken in a robbery! Still have the other 2. 1is cut down. The other is still in mil.spec.shape. The rifle is know as the Mk. 2A1.but I don't have all the versions . Someone else? These are good rifles and accurate. I paid $100ea.but have seen them at much higher prices in the past years. Wish I had bought more! I would not get it if it does not shoot well. The jungle carbines had a bad Rep.for shooting all over the place!

$299 is, well, a marked up price. Is this at your LGS?? Can you barter?? You might want to offer $250 if bartering is an option. The Ishapores have a good rep as shooters but I'm not sure about one in this configuration. Usually they are cosmetically beat up pretty bad.

Matt,

Yes and no. The outside is not chromed except the bolt and handle. Barrel inside is chromed. Butplate has no trap door. No scope mount either.

Will look at it today again.

Oh, and the stock is in excellent shape.

I was able to get a scope mount from Sarco. It took a little fitting but just use a screw to secure it in. It was very solid & stable. Some of these rifles have been imported &fixed up into nice sporters! I have heard the rifles shot fine but the J.C. model shoots all over the target! I have heard that about the .303& the .308 J.C.s! They were never able to solve that problem. The rifles can be cut down and built into a nice carbine. Magazines cost as much as the Ruger GSR. When you can find them! (check Sarco! ) These are great pik-up rifles! The .303 Enfields were considered the best rifle fielded in bolt action. Chambered in .308 nato, they are fine wepons! $299 is under some of the prices I have seen on these rifles. But if it has been fixed up like that quest 2, I might make an offer. $250 sounds about right. Check the accuracy if you can before buying it. JMA . Good luck!

Ok gun is painted (but I think they all were.)

It is a military Indian .308, according to stamps on the tang.

800 yrd/meter sights.

Real nice stock and it all looks good.

So I put $100 down and I'll pay the rest off next week.

Pity I couldn't fire it (but I did load 12 rounds in the mag and yes it's a 12 rounder.)

Hoosiers gun works has some mags for $65. Real military mags.

Midway has 'GPC' 10 rounders for $59.99

Gunparts Corp. does have extractors and such for the ishapore .308.

And .308 stripper clips do work so we will see when I get it.

Just a FYI guys for those of us that were thinking well ill take a .303 type 1 and convert it to a .308 jungle carbine . DO NOT DO IT. the british .303 is not the same reciver the Indian is double heat treated where the british .303 is not . something to consider when buying a jungle carbine .

These are not converted .303s! These were built just for the .308nato. It is not wise to load these rifles with maximum loads. Even though they were built for the .308 nato, they were not meant to take high pressure! As I understand it even a steady load of .308 win. can cause pressure problems. I have not had any issues with my rifles but I use Nato surplus most of the time. I do use .308 win. for hunting. These are good rifles but don't try to make it a magnum or you will have issues!
