I have a friend that belongs to a small group that is in a very rural area & is thinking of buying some Rifles &Handguns to issue to it's members that may need them. They will be used for S.D.mostly. But the rifles will also be used for hunting if needed. So far they are looking at the SKS & MAKAROV. What would you recommend for them? Rifle &Handgun.
 
Nothing wrong with an sks, they are getting more expensive though. I would probably forgo the mak. Prices on them are well over $200 and I see them go for more like $250+ for the Bulgarian clones. If you look at the $300 price range you get into modern autopistols chambered for 9x19, a more effective and available cartridge.

What kind of "small group"?:scrutiny:
Are we talking neighborhood watch, ninjas, or Navy SEAL wannabes?

Your friends "small group" better be damned careful of how they go about acquiring those firearms. It sounds like it would be very easy to run afoul of Federal law when they start filling out 4473's for guns they will "issue" to someone else.

Why not allow each member of this "small group" to get their own firearms?
 
lol if this is a srs thread, arm the tribe with Mosin Nagants they are cheap and so is the ammo.
 
I believe it is a neghborhood watch group. I was not in the discussion very long. It was asked in passing &I thought it interesting in that they have no L.E. in their area.I also said he had better check state &Fed.Laws &a attorney.

Lots of legal, moral and ethical issues here. It sounds like we are dancing around the obvious assumption. So.....

Just about any firearm can be used for self defense. Firearms with multiple round capability would be more effective than single shot muskets. Obviously a mix of long arms and sidearms would be in order. Beyond that you are going to come down to personal preference or majority preference. In a scenario where multiple users will be involved in the defending, uniformity makes a lot of sense. (footnote - see Military and Police)

Given those assumptions, pick a modern firearm manufactured by a well known company, chambered in a common caliber.

What is the anticipated threat? The answer to that might allow for more specific suggestions.

Also, wait for it, three, two, one.....go ahead, somebody post the ubiquitous suggestion

This is by far the safest and most legal course of action. Legal possession of firearms by someone other than the owner/4473 filler can be a touchy subject. And when you start bringing "small groups of armed rural people" into play, it makes those with badges antsy and start looking for errors and screwups.

Not to mention, personal ownership of firearms is just better. They're always there when you need them, they're yours to take care of and modify if you want. You can shoot them as long as you want. If you're serious about this small AND LEGAL group, just get together and all decide on one common pistol and rifle to purchase, then go by your own separately.

And take extra special care to follow all applicable local, state, and federal laws to the letter. Three letter agencies love to pick on "small rural groups". Be careful. Very careful. If you're already part of some sort of militia I can promise there is already a file on your group in some Law Enforcement agencies cabinet. Cops track militias like they track gangs. Hate that fact all you want, but it's still true. So just make extra extra extra careful that you're following ALL laws. If you even start feeling for a moment anything resembling a "we're a small group out in the woods, no one will notice" mindset...STOP. Recheck the laws. Recheck whether you're following them. If any of your militia members start talking, posting, writing, etc about anything violent, illegal, hateful, racist, etc kick them out. Again, thee letter agencies put groups like yours under the microscope and they don't stop till they find something.

As these people live in a very rural part of the state &have no law enforcement at all. The closest is about 2Hr,s away. So I believe they would be using them to stop small groups of criminals &wildlife ( bears & cats) ect. As I said I was not in the conversation very long. They are not a town just a group of homes out in the middle of no where, East of K.Falls. Not much out there!

So essentially they're starting their own law enforcement agency.

Instead of giving advice on what kind of weapons they should be "issuing", you should just stay clear of these types.
 
As I stated the person was asking advice. They have not started any thing yet. That was why he was asking. He was given good advice including to speak with an attorney . As this is a free country I believe that I should &can choose who to speak with. That is the reason I am online. If these people don't know what to do it makes sense to ask.,I must make a correction, they have started a group but didn't know how to go forward.

If they don't know what to do, recommending guns to them isn't what they probably need the most.

The parameters of your question have changed. But IMHO it probably doesn't matter what they choose as long as they are proficient with their guns of choice. Maybe talk to the Sheriff and see he recommends.
