Store prankster charged at Conway Wal-Mart

By LORNA COLQUHOUN
Union Leader Correspondent

CONWAY — There are times in a Wal-Mart store when customers need a little assistance from associates, but a request for help Tuesday by a Pittsburg teenager wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs had clerks calling police.

“He asked them for a hacksaw,” said Conway Police Lt. Joe Faia.

It turned out that Joha D. Turner, 18, had not escaped any official custody, but was instead pulling a prank.

But now he’s going to court next month to answer a charge of disorderly conduct, after being freed on his own recognizance.

According to Faia, Turner walked into the Conway Wal-Mart just after 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, wearing the jumpsuit and the handcuffs. He was accompanied by a couple of friends, who were videotaping the escapade.

“When we got there, he was leaving the store and was trying to hide between two cars,” Faia said. “He was still wearing the handcuffs.”

Faia said he didn’t know how store clerks reacted to the sight of Turner, although the teen apparently didn’t get as far as the hacksaw department.

Turner was taken to the police station and officers examined the jumpsuit, which had “state prison” written on it. However, Faia said, the jumpsuit was not the property of any corrections facility.

While Turner and his friends may have been looking for a laugh, Faia said police took the call from the Wal-Mart clerks seriously.

“While we recognize the humor, we take issue with the public alarm,” he said. “For the public to see a potentially escaped convict had the makings of a panic response.”

Faia said sending officers to respond to the store drew them away from other calls.

“It draws away from legitimate calls for service,” he said. “If you pull a prank, you have to deal with the consequences.”

What makes young people do stupid things like this? I'm darn glad I was never like that.

When I was much younger, I helped a friend quit a job at a local department store. I walked in wearing his shirt and nametag. The shirt was covered in stab wounds and had a liberal amount of fake blood (I worked as a techie at the auditorium in high school so I knew how to make the stuff) spattered on the front of it. I walked in, left the note taped to the door of his boss' office and walked out. The note was half written by my friend and half by me in obviously different handwriting. His portion of the note ended abruptly.

No one so much as blinked at me, but we thought it was funny anyway. Can't believe I did things like that, but I'm glad I never got in serious trouble for it.

Must be a super-super Wal-Mart if they have a hacksaw department!

Not real clever. He shoulda gone for the saws-all. Don't they have "Home Improvement" on jail TV?

Our entire state prison system gets locked down for pranks like this, doing emergency count to make sure one of our "guests" didn't escape thier "suite".

These kids really come up with some interesting pranks. This was excellent and quite humorous. Reminds me of the old episodes of Andy Griffin... Barney Fife, Gomer, and Goober. Lets not forget Aunt Bea! Citizen's Arrest!!

I dunno ... I think it was a funny prank ... made even funnier by the fact that it backfired (I guess I'm just twisted that way :neener: )

Back when I was a young'n we used to drive around drinking IBC Root Beer or IBC Cream Soda and whenever we saw a cop we would all take a drink just to see if he'd pull us over (if you don't get why just go here and look at the botttles).

Got us pulled over several times then act all innocent "Whatever is the problem officer? Was I speeding?" :p

Ah, stupidity and boldness ... wasted on the young ;)

The prank is funny, but what a hassle for the correction system!

Off topic, but related to prisoners: along I-75 in Michigan there are signs that warn "Prison Area. Do not pick up hitchhikers." I wish I had gotten a picture of that sign. I don't know why, but it makes me laugh.

Worst prank I ever did was once when my dad was driving and I was in the backseat, I took a bandanna and gagged myself and put my hands behind my back as if I were tied up. I leaned against the window and struggled a bit, to make it look convincing. I didn't get in trouble or "rescued" because I was too chicken to do it for more than a moment. Not an especially bright idea, I know, but really easy to do.

Agent P, when I've driven through Oklahoma, I've seen signs on the interstate saying, "hitchhikers may be escaped convicts."

If escaped convicts are indeed a serious problem, putting up road signs seems like a pretty anemic solutiion.

Hahahaha. We need the dummy that did the Walmart thing to go stand on the side of the road in his orange jumpsuit with his thumb up. Bwhahahahahaha.

I give the kid credit. I would have gone, gotten bolt cutters, cut the hand cuffs chain, then payed for them, since I used them and all. I can't believe he got arrested for this. Ya, it was a waste of resources and whatever, but come on. People should be allowed to walk around in orange jump suits and handcuffs on if they so choose.

I'm going to bet, he's a fan of the metal band Disturbed....The lead singer was known for his orange jumpsuit, mask and handcuffs at one point....

Why is he being charged with "disorderly conduct". Is that what they charge someone with when they have nothing, but still want to screw with the person.

Yes.

Reminds me of way back when streaking was the juvenile prank of choice. Some friends had picked a Dept store on a city corner so the streaker could run in the door on one side of the building and out the other side where they would be waiting for him in their car. Funny part is as soon as the guy ran into the store they took off and left him, nekkid, in the middle of town. I think you get the picture...

:D
