i am curios about the ithaca 37 defense model. i have a few remington 870's and one model 37 in 16 gauge. is this defense model a worthy addition to my collection.

The Defense models have a fixed barrel/receiver which is a negative. I think it's hilarious that the Ithaca website calls this a plus because you won't loose your barrel during a shootout!

The Ithaca is still a good deal, I would prefer a regular take down model, but I have fond memories of my VN Ithaca, a blue "Deerslayer" still with the engraving of Bambi on the receiver. The Govt. bought huge numbers of them, some literally off the shelf, and sent them to VN.
After lugging many different weapons in my aircraft, I finally settled on that Ithaca, it was light, packed a real punch at close range(and if the range was not close, the BG was not going to hear from me), and were dead bang reliable, never heard of one that failed to go bang. I also liked the manual operation, kind of like the revolvers we were issied, did not depend on some automatic action to function, always worked even when dirty.

My dad still has one he bought from his friend who is a county police officer. When they get new firearms they have the option to buy back their old one. I think he only paid $125 for it fifteen years ago. I know it's an older model but on the barrel it says Ithaca model 37 D.S. police special on it. It is pretty cool looking being an 8 shot model and looks like some type of OD green parkerized finish with plain satin wood furniture. I've put tons of rounds through it and never had a problem. I would have to say the action is not as slick feeling as my 870's or 500's. Also the front sight is sorta like a long pink plastic triangle mounted on a rifle base. It worked OK but had a little too much play in it. Also I believe it doesn't have a disconnecter in it meaning you don't have to let off the trigger when rapid firing. This may not be true of the newer models. The botton eject is kinda cool too.
