I just had a baby boy last night. He is healthy and I think we are going to take him home tomorrow. After seeing the little guy it got me to thinking about raising him up right. I have to admit it is not the first time I have thought about it, but what do you think the boy needs to learn? Of course this is a gun forum, so teaching him to shoot, safety, and respect for the wild is up there. I learned most of my shooting and gun handling from dove hunts. Probably start him with his own BB gun in a few years, but any thoughts on the process?

As an aside I took my 2 year old girl out to shoot the 22 a couple weeks ago. She really liked it and kept wanting to shoot it again and again. Admittedly, she was just kinda putting her hands on it, she was not even strong enough to pull the trigger. We were shooting ant nests and the like. She was really into it. Kinda thought that was a good sign. I also took her to my trap line. Trying to expose her to something other than the mall and park that her mom takes her. I also took her fishing last fall and caught few really small bream just to make sure we had something to play with, then threw 'em back.

Congratulations!

When I was born, my dad went out and bought 2 newspapers for the date of my birth. He gave them to me when I turned 20 after spending a great many nights over the years fostering an appreciation of history. It was one of the coolest birthday present's I've ever gotten.

To me, something with meaning, purchased on the day of a child's birth and then held in trust until such time as they can appreciate it, is one of the best presents you can give them.

A nice firearm would certainly qualify. I hope to gift to my own (future) son a quality firearm, something unique and individual, from the earliest days of his life. So too, will he receive a newspaper from me.

Good luck with him, and the sleepless nights to come. :)

grats we just got our first grand son a month ago, and i have a ss colt mkiv80 that i edc but me thinks it will be his in a few years

Congratulations. I started my son a little later than that, I think he was five when I bought him his first bb gun.

Congratulations. My oldest son, just back from Afghanistan with the USMC, learned the four rules young with a projectile-firing toy gun--a dart gun modeled after a pump action shot gun. He wasn't allowed to keep the darts with the gun when he put it away. Basic stuff that transferred very well when he got his first .22 around 8 years old. He received his first centerfire, a Remington Model Seven Youth in .243 for his 11th birthday. He went on short hunting outings with me from an early age, too, just learning an appreciation for the outdoors. He started hunting regularly with me and his granddad from age 12 on.

Now he's a college grad, married, and kicking off a new career as he ends his stint with the Marines. Not much time at this stage of life for hunting, but he's teaching his bride to shoot. I look forward to future hunting trips with him when he has the time, and can't wait to take his kids (DV) to the range!

Congrats on the new baby!

Whenever words of wisdom are needed it's best to go straight to the source of all wisdom.

Here's just a sampling of some things we should all be teaching our children.

Proverbs 22:

1. A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.

6. Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

9. He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed, for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

11. He that loveth pureness of heart: for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.

17. Bow down thine ear and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge. 18. For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, that they may indeed be ready upon thy lips. 19. That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made it known to thee this day, even to thee!

22. Rob not the poor because he is poor, neither oppress the afflicted at the gate; 23. for the LORD will plead their cause, and despoil the soul of those that despoiled them.

24. Make no friendship with an angry man, and with a furious man thou shalt not go, 25. lest thou learn his ways and get a snare for thy soul.

Deuteronomy 6:

1. "Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it, 2. that thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life, and that thy days may be prolonged.

5. And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I like the idea of the newspapers from the birth day. I will have to go to the paper place and get a couple. Trying to find a place to store it for ~20 years could be a challenge for me, though...

Thank you for the words of wisdom from the Good Book. Even those that are not religious have to admit those axioms ring true.

Lifetime membership to the NRA? That could be a good idea. Youngest member get any recognition? Heh.
