Its official. My 300$ Curio is more accurate than my AR

try getting off the bench and see which one you shoot better. try to put 5 rounds in the black from 50 yards in 5 seconds and then post the pics.

neither were designed to be shot from benches at 100 yards.

This doesnt surprise me. Unless the AR is scoped, the practical accuracy of a standard carbine is going to be similar to the SKS. You just seem to shoot better with non peep sights.

@robert- 50 yards

@Jackal- I DID replace the sks front sight with a skinner one. Couldnt have been happier with the groupings its giving now.

@taliv-Funny you should mention that! I had tried that as well! The SKS gave better groupings in that regard too!

@adelbridge-for the SKS i used Tula FMJ, Monarch FMJ, and Tula SP to make sure they all were hitting where they should be. They were! For the 5.56 It was more monarch and some fusion SP as well.

Yes, and some people shoot better left handed. No problem and I'm just being a little funny. We all have our particulars. I just happen to shot the AR style firearms better.

How's that SKS trigger job???? I have been pondering sending my trigger group away to have that done....wondering if it truly worth it.

Very cool. There was a day when I could shoot irons pretty good, but anymore I just don't see so well. That is good shooting right there.

I have not had a Kivaari trigger, but Bill Springfield did the trigger on my SKS, and it is a lot easier to use. Still a long, creepy, pull, but it is smoother, sort of like the SVT40.

Good luck and good shooting!

+1

I took my AR (open sights) out Sunday and did a little shooting prone at 200 yards with only a sling for support. I'm almost positive I couldn't do this with my SKS. No way. No how. and I don't even think I did all that well since it was pretty windy.

Mine will.

That's minute of chest, something a decent SKS can do, with a competent shooter.

may I inquire about your AR? care to share the specs? have you tried quality ammo? im able to keep a good 1- 1.5 moa 5 shot group with irons at 100. that is with handloads and black hills. wally world winchester white box will do 1.5-2.5 moa at the same distance. im running a stag/rra combo with WOA 18' spr 1/7 barrel with spikes free float. if I scope it I can put 5 in 1/4" at 100 yards. ive also had zero reliability issues with it over 5 years of shooting. I love it! the wife loves it too! plus, where the heck you finding $179 sks' s?

Yugo SKS is my favorite as well. The Yugo brasscased surplus give s very tight groups as well.

Every AR I own will shoot 1" or under, five-shot groups @ 100 yds. One of them will shoot 1/2" or less groups @ 100 yds. Either you're a lousy shot or you need a better scope/trigger on your AR. ;)

Well....he is not a lousy shot. His SKS targets attest to that. One does have to wonder about the AR and its ammo, though. I have both types of rifle and there is no way that my SKS shoots as well as my Colt.

My Yugo SKS is also the most accurate semi auto I own. It's been the value ever for the $90 I spent on it.

My Chinese SKS (which I paid more for) is a POS that doesn't shoot worth crap in comparison.

From what I've seen, every SKS is different. My Norinco is more Accurate than my friends Yugo and Russian. However, I have another friend with a Yugo that is just as accurate as my Norinco. I think it all depends on barrel condition. If you have a smooth as glass barrel with good rifling then you're good to go. Another part which I heard effects accuracy is the gas tube and piston.

I think official is perhaps too strong without testing a broader range of ammo. What make of AR is it. People like to talk about ARs as if they are some monolithic group of guns when nothing could be further from the truth.

Cartridge and barrel twist selection makes a big deal on the AR pattern.

69gr Sierra Matchking will do 1/2 MOA in my JP Rifle. I know *I* am the limiting factor there.

Standard M855 will barely do 1.5 MOA.

I dont believe that the AR is the end all be all, but for what it is, it is a very capable rifle. I can use it for varmits to moose. (with optional calibers) but as to a rifle that was "doomed" from tbe get go. its hard not to appreciate what the AR has become. with the new technology in machining and little tweeks, danial defense has made an AR that is torture test resistant. I would never bet my life on any type of machine, but I would not feel out gunned using my AR in self defense, hunting or end of the world type situations.

nice shooting. i don't find your results particularly surprising at all, including off bench. i also think the ammo you use in 5.56 is pretty much correct for comparison. using higher quality ammo in the AR would be more apples to oranges imho.
