I've gone through a lot of handguns...

after spending over 40 years of looking for the perfect hand gun. It has only taken 200 or so different guns passing through my hands, my needs, wants, and desires still change when I see something different. Currently only have about a dozen that are keepers (at lest for now) but that could, will change . Good luck : Bill PS: it is cheaper to buy use and trade than getting new and taking the loss. Went through a lot of shotguns when I was shooting trap, didn't find the perfect one there either. :(

georgiaraised...

i haven't read the entire thread yet, but it seems to me your problem isn't necessarily that you don't like any handguns. it's that you have sold or traded all the ones you actually did like.

a word of advice...
never, never, ever sale or trade a gun! there's just no good reason to do so. when i saw what you wrote about the M66 and GP100, i wanted to cry for you. after putting money into customizing and tuning a gun, that you admit you liked, why why why would you get rid of it?!?!

unless you strongly dislike a gun to the point of hatred, i see no good reason to get rid of a gun. maybe your kids would want it one day? personally, i'd rather give a nice gun like the ones you describe to a friend or relative on indefinite loan that to sell it and regret it later.

I've been through a wide assortment of handguns and have settled exclusively on S&W revolvers and high end 1911's.

That's what I'm talking about.

I'm about to pick up a Fusion Commander Bobtail and a S&W 66

Keep them

I agree with those who say Keep the Guns, unless you're trading way up.
Saxon: I can only say Wow:what: That is ..... beautiful.
TGAR: Don't you agree?:neener:

Saxon, YOU'RE MY HERO!!!!!:D
(btw, I AM available for adoption as well - you never know when a good machinist can come in handy - like action work on revolvers, etc...!)

Georgia, 2 things - I can't really understand the 1911 thing you were talking about. I hate 1911s as well, becuz' when I pick them up I can't seem to pry them out of my hand!!! Bought a NIB Gold Cup from a retiring FFL back in the Clinton years, and is still 1 of my favorites, next to my Ithaca 1911 that my father carried in Korea, of course;)
When I bought the GC, my only regret is that the fellow had a matching 10mm Delta Elite, and I couldn't have them both:banghead: It only took me about 6 months to pay off the GC, and another 6 to get my wife over it! :what:
But I'm getting better! (at least my therapist thinks so! I told her, it's only a little fetish!:p) I actually picked up a RIA tactical about 2 months ago, and didn't buy it! I did have the shakes for about 2 hrs tho... the saleman only had to whack me on the back of the hand 3x with an old shotgun barrel to get me to let loose that day:scrutiny:

But, what I do understand, is the GP100! They're great guns! I traded a S&W 18-3 for my 1st about 15 yrs ago. Slicked up the action, installed Wolff springs - she was a great shooter. Then traded it on an M1A:banghead: Sound familiar? Well, I'm on my 2nd GP100 now, and she ain't goin' nowhere. She doesn't get shot as much these days, but if I ever need just 1 gun, that's the 1 I'm gonna grab. Stone cold reliable, accurate, and as deadly as I need her to be.;)

And what's kinda funny is that I've been looking for an SP101 in .357 for a few weeks now.... mebbe we were separated at birth? The problem is, I almost need to sell/trade something else to get 1, but I can't seem to go thru with it! Thought I had a rifle traded 2x for an SP101, and both times they backed off....:( Chickens...
The only problem there is that I can't decide on the 2-1/4" or 3" barrel, so I'll probably end up with both....someday....just don't tell my wife!:D

you probably should try out the Beretta 92 type pistols. the 92 has variants in .40s&w and in the .22LR. it also has the new 90-two but from what you said about sponginess you woudn't like it.

you could try an IMI Jericho 941- you might like that
Walther P99
H&K USP
SIG 220series
Sprinfield XD
and-although it's expensive-the IMI Desert Eagle has a conversion for 9rd mags of .357, but you can't stick .38 specials in it

but it sounds like you have been shoping aroung a lot in the 1911 design, and you don't like it too much.

there is literally a world of handguns out there, and a lot of them don't have those excessive needless safties that alot of American pieces have. there's nothing wrong with owning a foreign make, you just have to remmember: "we taught them how to do that"

I don't see how you cannot like a Smith 686 4-incher. You might also get a premium Ruger stainless Security-Six, if you can find one. A 4-inch is better for defense; a 6-inch is better for outdoor/hunting.

A Ruger Mark II/III also should be in everyone's collection. The Ruger Single-Six also is a lot of fun. (My first handgun was a cheap RG cowboy .22LR, nickel plated, with crappy brown plastic grips, but it was fun.)

Handguns, like anything else, are personal, and you've already gone through a lot.

You need a second job so you can keep some of them the next time you get the urge to buy another one.

i have 2 mp's myself, they have been totally reliable and accurate, but was thinking of trading them to try something new.

the trigger pulls do feel spongy, smith should have done a better job with that. the grip, although more comfortable than my glock, has a rather undefined, generic feel to it. it takes some adjusted to get your preferred grip on the mp's.

i don't know what i want, maybe a glock 23, or another 1911, hmmm....

i had a glock 21 sf at one point, traded it for my mp45 compact which felt better in my small hands.

i sold a ruger vaquero for an xd 45 (that xd was a total piece of crap), which i eventually traded to get the glock 21sf.

yes we all get impulssive and trade what we have for the newest best thing
