Ive got 870 fever

I have a buddy who works in a pawn shop who I use to do FFL transfers. Was in today and looked on the rack. He had 12-13 870 Wingmasters 20ga and 12ga. All but one vent ribbed and varied from full and modified chokes,
2 3/4" chambers and a couple 3" mags. Take your pick $289. No they are not new shotguns all are used and some better than others. I promise that if you took the poorest looking 870 wm that was built between the 50's and 70's. It would out-preform anything that you could by off the shelf today. Be it a new remmy, mossberg, winchester, or half of the benelli line.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned that more 870s (which includes Wingmasters) have been sold than any other shotgun, period. As for me, an 870 is the only pump shotgun I will ever own.

Wingmaster is the full trim, shiny, smooth as silk 870. Be careful here as some may only shoot 2 3/4" shells.

Express is the workhorse edition. Matte, not so smooth, but entirely functional.

SuperMag is heavier, will shoot 3 1/2" shells and about like the Express as far as looks.

The older 870 / Wingmasters probably won't have screw in chokes so be sure to inspect the barrel so you know what choke it is. I assume it will be marked somewhere on the barrel. Also, barrels can be purchased in whatever length/choke you want as well as barrels with screw in choke capabilities. There is nothing that will impress your buddies more than breaking out the 36" full choke barrel and hitting a dove at 50-60 yards!!

I guess there have been a few runs of 870's that weren't up to snuff, but in 10 million units there are bound to be a few like that. The string of bad examples seems to have stopped now. I am not hearing near as many complaints now. Still one of the best shotguns both in design and durability. No real concern in my mind with purchasing one if you need it. I would take one nice 870 over two Mossberg guns, but that's just me.

870 express owner here since the early nineties. Hard to believe that was twenty years ago. Mine came with the slug barrel and shot barrel. I love it, its never let me down and its now officially the longest owned gun I own as I had to part ways with many fine pieces in college because I was broke.

love both of my 870s. one i have converted to a HD weapon. it was a youth model so the barrel was perfect for the conversion.

the other has a good many dead birds under its belt
