I currently own two J-frames - a 12-ounce 340 Airlight and a 3-inch Model 60.

340 came with a Hogue Bantam grip - two-finger grip with exposed backstrap.
60 came with Uncle Mike's grip #59007 - a 3-finger grip secured by a side screw, with a thin backstrap. I have not found the name for that grip or a place that sells them. Anybody knows what this grip is called?

My objectives in the order of importance are;
1. To have identical grips on both revolvers, so the 60 can better serve as a practice substitute for 340.

2. To have short, two-finger grips. A 3-finger grip is basically a K-size grip.

3. To have a grip that eases the pain of shooting 357s out of the 340.

I love the feel or the 2-finger Hogue Bantam but shooting 357s with it was painful. It sells in several places, though currently on backorder.
The Uncle Mike's grip fits my hand well. I suspect it will make shooting 340 more comfortable. I like the feel of both grips - with the finger grooves, texture, etc.

I don’t like Uncle Mike's grip’s extra length. I am considering cutting off the bottom part of it so it extends just 1/16 below the heel(?).
The problem is whether it would work and where to buy a second one.

Alternatively, would it help to go with Bantam grip and add something to cover the backstrap? Maybe glue a strip or rubber or something? Some other comparable rubber grips?

Anybody has any ideas or experience to share?

Thanks,
miko

I bought a set of Pachmayr compac grips for my J-frame before that covered the backstrap, and allowed for a full 3 finger grip. I put them on and shot some rounds. Then I put back on the Bantams, and the recoil was only very slightly reduced with the Pachmayr's, and in my opinion there was no point. So I kept the Bantams. That 340 you have is going to have sharp recoil, even with standard pressure 125 gr+ loads. And with .357 mag loads in that 340, its really just too much in that light a gun.

Here's a cheap way to see if it really makes that much difference. Swap out your grips, put the 3-finger grip thats on your 60, onto your 340 and shoot it. See how it is, and go from there.

I second the Pachmayr's, but....belive it or not...Taurus makes a neat boot grip for it's small frame wheelies (85,605, etc.) that works great on a J frame 'smith. You'll have to drill a new hole for the grip pin, but that's really simple to do.

www.taurususa.com/products/rgrips.cfm part no. 5-22880

They're the same lenght as the J frame grips, only slightly thicker and they cover the backstrap. I have a pair on my 642 and they work great. I drilled a new grip pin hole, removed the Taurus emblem, ground it smooth, spread a thin coat of JB WELD on it, sanded it smooth and painted it satin black. They look like factory grips.

Thanks, Magsnubby.

Do you mean small ones for $9, number 5-20880 ? How do they attach? I don't see a screw. Do they just clip on like one-piece Hogue Bantams?

Hi, Miko

Are you still out there? If so I have a question about your UM grips you didn't like. I am looking for those.

Thanks.
