Jacketed vs Copper plated in $$

If you are loading full house magnum rounds then jacketed is really your only choice. Practice rounds or non magnum rounds plated is what I prefer. 45ACP, plated only. The only lead I shoot is gas checked.

A plain lubed lead/ or coated lead bullet of the right hardness can be loaded "Full House"

I had lead issues in the past so I switched to shooting plated.
I traced lead issue to indoor range where I shot.
Nothing wrong with lead bullets or jacketed but I prefer a bullet with no exposed lead at the base, so plated or JHPs for my pistol rounds.

Edit: When I said lead issues I meant me not the ammo, high blood lead level:eek:

I think if you order from Xtreme when they are not having one of their mega-sales events (like Black Friday, with a site-wide 10%+ discount) you will get decent shipping times. When they do have one of their big sales, they typically take 3 weeks to ship, at least that has been my experience. I've gotten stocked up to the point that I only order during one of their big sales, and I am never in a hurry to get it anyway.

RMR has always shipped fast for me, and their shipping is always free. THR members get a 5% discount, so keep that in mind when comparing prices. Their "hardcore match" plated bullets work pretty well, but the 45acp HM bullet has to be seated deeper than their normal plated bullets to pass the "plunk test". FWIW, the RMR regular plated RN bullets have almost identical profiles compared to the Xtreme bullets, so I typically use the same load recipes for them.

I have a 16" 9mm carbine that I have worked up loads for. My carbine absolutely loves the RMR jacketed 115gn bullets. With a muzzle velocity of around 1500fps, it is a little hot for most plated bullets but the FMJs are ideal. I'm getting around 2.5" groups @100 yards, and about 1" @ 50 yards with those bullets.

Plenty of folks shoot lead full out in magnum pistol calibers with no leading.

True. Right now, though, I am fighting a problem with leading, and even copper buildup, in my 44mag Ruger Super Blackhawk, when using either coated or plated bullets. This is with a mid-range load using BE86 powder, and velocity is < 1200fps from a 10" barrel. This is a fairly new gun to me, and I believe my problems may be from some rough machining in the forcing cone area. I don't have problems with jacketed, so I think I will stick to jacketed for mid-range to full magnum loads for now. I will continue to experiment with low-velocity powder puff loads with the coated and plated bullets and see what happens.

I can agree somewhat . I shoot full out loads using lead in a 480 Ruger without leading using gas checked bullets. Years ago I used to shoot 357 Magnums with lead and had terrible leading problems. I will admit that I don't remember who's bullets I used , but that experience made me swear off lead bullets when shooting full out loads in magnums except as mentioned in 480 Ruger with hard cast gas checked bullets.

You won't be disappointed with Rocky Mountain Reloading.

Check out the sticky on the Handloading/Reloading forum for where reloading components are for sale and you will find other sellers as well that do a good job.

First you need to consider what your barrel will accept. RMR bullets are the highest quality, but they use a blunt design on their "in house" bullets that will force short freebore pistols like CZ, Springfield XD and other "match grade barrels" to a Max OAL around 1.060". This is absolutely not an issue with Glock and other more generously proportioned chambers.

I love RMR. I use their FMJ and plated bullets in 9mm and 45 ACP but that does not mean I still don't look at Xtreme from time to time. They just ran 20% off with free shipping. 9mm 124gr at $.06 and .09 for 45 ACP is hard to pass up.

RMR has had good pricing on FMJ. IIRC I paid $.075 on my last order of 4,0000. For 45 ACP Percision Delta is the best pricing I have found for FMJ. If you order 2000+ you can get them at $.12

Watch the clearance section. I've bought thousands of their 9mm-115HP and 135HP for 5.5 cents apiece shipped. They have 124s too but they go fast indeed. I had the last 2K in my cart but they were gone by the time I checked out.

I shied away when reading their description: "blemished factory seconds that didn't meet specification." Factory seconds due to cosmetic flaws is one thing, but it they are out of spec (too small) I'd be concerned
I was concerned initially as well, but I've already received and inspected 12K of them. They are perfect dimensionally. Also in the description is a statement that they will have some degree of spotting or staining - that is what gets them clearanced. I usually don't find more than a few bullets per thousand that you can find spotting or staining on. They have really high standards for what gets sold at normal prices. But of course, the proof is in the shooting, and they shoot great in my nines and GP100.

I also took a chance and ordered 1K of .40 180 Gr HPs and they measured just fine.

I just ordered a thousand last Saturday. I'll let you know when they get here and how they stack up.

I got burned on some blems from Midway that were undersized, so I have been leery of blems/seconds, but others were reporting good results and I needed some of those bullets for my boys (Not wanting to work up a load with another bullet for a caliber I don't load anymore.).

Yeah, that Xtreme 20% off special was too much for me to pass up. I've got about 110 lbs of plated bullets on the way.

As far as the RMR FMJs, those 115gn 9mm bullets are awesome! That is the only thing I will shoot in my 9mm carbine.

I have had the same experience before with their big sales, but not this time. I ordered 1000 bullets on Black Friday and 2000 more on Sunday, all at 20% off and free shipping. All 3000 arrived today. I'm a happy camper.

I like 125gr jhp bullets for my .357 handguns and noticed that Zero 125 jhp bullets are 100 bucks a thousand with free shipping. That's less than some plated bullets I've seen.
As stated above Xtreme bullets black Friday sale was excellent. I bought a thousand 9mm 125gr plated bullets for only 62 dollars and a few cents in change. Not many people knew it but there was a code to get another 5% off on top of the 20%. At 6.2 cents each I couldn't pass it up. I didn't need them but they won't go to waste.

Would be interested if anyone feels plated is better than jacketed.

Again, depends on the bullet/manufacturer. Speer's Gold Dot/Deep Curl line of handgun bullets are plated, and are considered by many as some of the best bullets for SD/HD and hunting big game available. Not all jacketed bullets are any good for anything other than shooting at paper....i.e. FMJs. Even some JHPs are not designed to expand readily at the velocities they are generally used at or have explosive expansion and fragment, not really desired for big game. So there are instances where plated are better than jacketed. Those plated bullets that are quality SD/HD/Hunting projectiles, can and do cost more than "plinker" grade jacketed. Some "plinker" grade plated will shoot better at paper than "plinker" grade jacketed. One does not know this until they try them outta their guns, using their loads. If all I had to shoot was Speer's Gold Dots/Deep Curls and could afford to shoot them like "plinker" grade plated/jacketed bullets, they would be the only projectiles I would buy, due to my experience with them outta my guns..

Well, I ordered on Friday, about 4500 bullets total (110lbs worth) and I have yet to receive a shipping notice. Like I said, I'm in no big hurry.
