(AP) The Rev. Jesse Jackson was arrested Saturday at a demonstration outside a suburban Chicago gun shop and charged with one count of criminal trespass to property.

The civil rights leader was arrested when he refused to move away from the entrance to Chuck's Gun Shop in Riverdale, police said. He has protested with other community activists outside the shop in recent weeks after a 16-year-old honor student was gunned down on a city bus.

Police said the shooting was gang-related but the teen was not the intended target.

Jackson, who says the gun shop's proximity to Chicago provides gang members and criminals easy access to firearms, has used the protests to call for stricter gun laws.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, a Catholic priest who oversees a congregation on Chicago's South Side, also was arrested and charged with Jackson.

A message seeking comment from the gun shop was not immediately returned Saturday afternoon.

Two teens have been charged as adults with taking part in the May shooting of Blair Holt, an honor student at Julian High School.

Jackson is also an ordained minister. I think the Catholic priest is also the one who threatened the gun store owner during an interview with being "rubbed out" or some such attempt at gangsta speech which he later recanted. Character? Respectability? Words that are foreign to either of them.

During an address at an anti-gun rally in front of Chuck's, Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina's Church, exhorted the crowd to "drag" shop owner, John Riggio, from his shop "like a rat" and "snuff" him. Rev. Pfleger went on to tell the crowd that legislators that vote against gun control legislation should be "snuffed" as well. As many know, "snuff" is slang for especially violent murder.

I heard him speak at a nearby university about 15 or 20 years ago.

He spoke of the the enormous monies being spent on building new prisons. He then made the remark "those prisons are being made to house you".

I've always wondered if there might not have been some truth to his predictions. Helped me to be steadfast in my Jeffersonoian resolutions.
 
This arrest was staged to try and help prove a point and get the medias attention. I was actually surprised to learn this in my criminal justice class taught by my professor who is a former police officer. Demonstrators get permits before they demonstrate in cities like this. Many times they will sit down and go over what is going to happen with police before it happens. The police will frequently ask how many arrests they want and conduct a rehearsal for 'passive' resistance to look like they are fighting when they really arent. The media is informed ahead of time where and when the arrests are going to take place to be sure to get their story. without people getting arrested the media couldn't care less. This is a way for the police to keep the crowd under control and still get the attention from the arrests that the protestors want.Judges are also informed ahead of time to go easy on those arrested in these 'staged arrests'. Jesse jackson getting arrested gets attention and thats why were talking about it on this gun board. I thought I would share this information with you guys before anyone gets too worked up.:cool: I really wouldnt believe it if I wouldnt have heard it with my own ears from a credible source. take it for what its worth.

This arrest wasn't orchestrated or planned. In fact it went just the opposite of what Jesse was hoping for.

It was the third "protest" at the gun store in three weeks by these two. The first two got little news coverage and not much local "ink".

After two other failed (no big news coverage) protests Jesse and Pfleger decided to "up the ante" by going into the, as described by Jesse, "hostile environment of the gun store to try and reason with the owner to save the lives of Chicago schoolchildren".

The tough part for him has been that each time the news media have also interviewed some of us local gun owners about the store and our point of view.

Having a balanced news report, where the reporters remind the viewers that Chicago already has a total ban on handguns, is a major failure for him and Operation PUSH. So they are coming back again today, on a Friday when most folks are at work. He's got a schoolbus load of Operation PUSH volunteers available all the time anyway.

He was arrested last week because the store owner asked him, Pfleger and his bodyguards to stop blocking the front door and he refused to move so the Riverdale cops hauled him away.

Then they refused to allow Jesse to file an assault complaint against John Riggio, the owner, because Jesse claimed John pushed him away from the door. It didn't work because the cops were right there and saw Jesse take a step back on his own and claim that John had pushed him.

Earlier this week the mayor of Riverdale, an African-American woman who lost family members to gang violence, asked Jesse and Pfleger to please take their protests somewhere else, since there were absolutely no connections between the gun store and gang or crime guns and it costs the Riverdale taxpayers about $3,500 for extra police protection every time Jesse & company shows up. She also praised John Riggio fro running an honest and successful business in their community.

Now we wait to see what today brings on his fourth attempt to create an issue and a scene.
 
Maybe I am stupid, but aren't all gun sales subject to state and federal laws? If I was a gunstore owner, I would not be selling guns to people who were not to have them. I am not enamored with going to prison, even if Paris Hilton were my cellmate...

Jesse and company have been accusing Chuck's of allowing/encouraging straw purchases, where one person legally buys a gun for another that is prohibited from owning one. Or of buying a gun legally then selling it to a gang member for a profit.

Of course they don't have any kind of evidence that this has ever happened but that never stopped them from making accusations before. After all it's not the proof, it's how serious the accusation sounds in a TV sound byte that matters to some folks.

It's a ridiculous charge after Daley's ham handed attempts to entrap Northern Illinois FFL's a few years ago by sending out cops to try and do straw purchases.

Today, most gun shops in the collar counties won't even sell a handgun or semi-auto rifle or shotgun to anyone with a Chicago or Cook County address. I've been in stores and seen it first hand and I can't blame them.

Just glad I escaped across the border to Will County.
 
I am waiting for word on today's planned protest. I am still convinced that the Rev Jackson suffers from attention deficit (not the disorder, just attention), and the good Fr. Pfleger may have been drinking the Kool-ade.
 
Why isn't the owner of Chuck's Gun Shop doing something else? Personally I'd be filing a civil or criminal lawsuit against Jackson alledging charges of harrassment, tresspassing, defamation of character, inhibiting a private business, and even domestic terrorism.
 
OK, DonP. A "thumbs up" to you. I ascribe to the notion that if you can own a gun, you can go buy one or not. I also ascribe to the notion that the seller has no responsibilty for the sale to one who is legally able to own a gun. I think gun ownership holds the secondmost degree of responsibilty in life after fathering kids. And what is the seller to do-- ask the buyer if he is going to sell the gun to a crook? What kind of answer would he expect? It's crazy that the lawyers in DC want to prosecute manufacturers and sellers for the actions of users.
 
I didn't bash him I just wished he would go away, forever. I don't like him. I believe that he smears the good name of the christian faith by professing to be clergy, but these are my opinions and I have a right to them.

I agree with your right to speak on it. What I find funny is a lot of people are complaining because Jesse Jackson is using his right to speak as well. But what I am saying is that there are a lot threads about this incident already so why the need for a new one?

If your so concerned with the Christian faith why arent you going after the Catholic Church for hiding the molestation of little boys and girls? Or go after Ted Haggard for his hypocrisy? What about Fred Phelps and his Westboro Church? They are giving Christianity a worse name than Jesse Jackson yet I dont see you starting threads about them?
 
Being as I am not a christian, I don't give a damn about the christian faith. I don't start threads on those other persons because they don't make international news (I am currently resident in Scotland and have to answer questions about this stuff).
BTW who is Ted Haggard?

I'm not religious and believe that Jackson, Phelps, et al are all equally loathesome.

A skunk's a skunk.

The particular relevance of Jackson's loathesomeness is his attacks on the right to keep and bear arms.

What I would complain about is that he doesn't have a right to claim to represent people he does not represent. By the use of the words "Reverend" and "ordained minister", his actions are attributed to the Christian faith. They aren't part of Christianity.

Though they actually do give a bad name to Christianity, you're basically asking us to open a pandora's box. I can't get into those issues without getting into arguments that go back 1000 years. Unless you're involved in the argument, and versed in different Christian theological concepts, what most would have to say about it doesn't make any sense - and doesn't belong on this board anyway.

Suffice it to say, the "Reverend" is an easy mark because nothing he has done in recent history had anything to do with Christ. So in the spirit of unbridled irony, let me state simply: He may be a Christian, but he doesn't represent us.

Because they are off topic on this forum. Jesse's protests are gun related.
