Jesse Stone on tonight

And some bad guys got a liberal dose of his 1911! Great books, written by a great author. Tom Selleck does a great job and the movie was good.

I especially like the good gun vignettes he passes along. "One in the head and one in the chest" says Suitcase. Whereupon Jesse says, "and keep firing till the threat is over." Don't shoot to kill, shoot to end the threat. Proper advice.

Just finished watching it.

I think this one was just as good as the last. There are some departures from the novels but entirely within the bounds of believability. In the book, Chief Stone is a man of medium size. Selleck, of course, is a larger man.

In the book, Stone carries a compact revolver. Selleck packs a full size .45 with what looks like Novak sights, in a nice high ride holster. Also wears a double mag pouch. Almost all the gun handling is very credible. I would have preferred to see him reload before holstering, but, hey, you can't have everything. ;)

Two things I've noticed about the Jesse Stone movies.

1. Folks apparently have excellent night vision in that fictional town since no one ever turns on a light. :)

2. If the movies are supposed to take place in the same locales (a short ways up the coast from Boston) as the books, they got it wrong. I live there--the movies remind me more of Maine coast or a more rural part of MA.

Abtomat, they shot it in Canada.

I'm glad I stumbled upon it about 10 minutes into the
show. I like the part about getting the AR lined up, and
most of the movie, but I thought the dog had died...
Course I realize it's just TV. Sure beats anything else
that was on broadcast TV tonight. Don't know who
made the 1911, but I did notice Novak sights on the
rear of it didn't I ?

Did you happen to catch the exchange between Stone and his officer as they were entering the store against the armed hostage taker? Stone said something to the effect the officer would know what to do when the shooting started, at which the officer replied one in the chest, one in the head. Jesse countered with you shoot until the threat is eliminated.

and most of the movie, but I thought the dog had died...

The movies aren't in sequence with the books.

Jesse's mag pouch carries one magazine and a Surefire or similar flashlight. At least one of them did, maybe the prop department had a double that I didn't notice.

I noticed that when Jesse told Suitcase to move one more click to the left on his AR that he twiddled the elevation knob on his Aimpoint. Oh, well.

I don't understand why they showed them out of chronological sequence; the dog, the shrink, the girlfriends, etc., etc.

Jesse Stone

How did this latest one end? I only got to see it to were Jesse has the "date" with the school principel.;)

Well written

The screenplay was well written and the gun use was far more accurate and realistic than anything Tom Cruiise or anybody else in Hollywierd has ever done.

IIRC, I think Selleck signed on for 4 or 5 of the Jesse Stone made for TV movies?

They do a nice job of developing his character as more complex and realistic than the usual TV cop. The character has got his share of self doubt, but it doesn't stand in the way of getting the job done.

My wife enjoys them too, simply because it's so well written and the scenery is great.

I thought he told "Suitcase" it was "two to the body and one to the head ... until the threat has stopped"?

Doggone

The dog in last night's movie is a different dog than the one he had when he first moved to Paradise. That one died. The one last night is the one that got Suit's attention at the first murder scene in Stone Cold. I hope they keep making these, I'm enjoying the heck out of them. But how many people here think that last night the bullet would've gone through Finn's body and hit Jesse Stone when Stone pulled Finn around to use as a shield? I like how Stone followed his own advice and kept shooting the bald guy until the threat was eliminated.

Assuming it was a hollow point .45 (???) from the writer/director's point-of-view... then it very well might not have exited into Selleck.

Of course, if the writer/director did NOT want the bullet to hit Selleck -- and given the fact that Selleck was listed in the credits as one of three co-writers -- we can assume tht Selleck might have said to the director, "Dude, the guy is using expanding hollow points! I ain't gettin' wounded!"

Well, I went back and read the novels, which are enjoyable page-turners. They are pretty dark, as the main character is battling both booze and his obsession with his ex-wife. In one of the books he actually follows her on a date, watches her from his car, pulls his gun, and points it at her date while thinking about killing the guy. A couple of them, especially the first one, Night Passage, and Trouble in Paradise, have such ridiculous plots that I wanted to throw the books across the room, and there is an undertone of hostility to non-leo gun ownership.

I was surprised to see that the ending to the story that was on the other night had been changed so much. In the books the guy carries a revolver that was his personal or backup in Los Angeles and is issued a SIG in Paradise. I guess Selleck prefers the 1911, which is OK with me.

Having seen the two TV movies before reading the books it's hard to get Selleck out my mind as the character, but he fits it pretty well. The most unrealistic part of the books is that he seems to keep finding very beautiful and willing women on every tree, none of whom demand a commitment or even breakfast, though maybe that's not unrealistic for someone that looks like Tom Selleck.
