Well, I went back and read the novels, which are enjoyable page-turners. They are pretty dark, as the main character is battling both booze and his obsession with his ex-wife. In one of the books he actually follows her on a date, watches her from his car, pulls his gun, and points it at her date while thinking about killing the guy. A couple of them, especially the first one, Night Passage, and Trouble in Paradise, have such ridiculous plots that I wanted to throw the books across the room, and there is an undertone of hostility to non-leo gun ownership.
I was surprised to see that the ending to the story that was on the other night had been changed so much. In the books the guy carries a revolver that was his personal or backup in Los Angeles and is issued a SIG in Paradise. I guess Selleck prefers the 1911, which is OK with me.
Having seen the two TV movies before reading the books it's hard to get Selleck out my mind as the character, but he fits it pretty well. The most unrealistic part of the books is that he seems to keep finding very beautiful and willing women on every tree, none of whom demand a commitment or even breakfast, though maybe that's not unrealistic for someone that looks like Tom Selleck.
