Johnny Benson faces sponsor dilemma in Trucks

GRAND RAPIDS -- Grand Rapids native Johnny Benson Jr. and his Red Horse Racing team are either going to have to continue its sponsorship search or accept less television time.

That's what the defending NASCAR Camping World Trucks champion said when he visited Grand Rapids on Monday with Michigan International Speedway president Roger Curtis.

Benson and the MIS staff were in town to promote the June 13 Michigan 200 Truck race, and Benson is hoping to have a sponsor by the time that date arrives.

It appears Benson has a company lined up, but the television networks that carry the races, including Speed, which airs the majority of the events, have Red Horse Racing putting the brakes on that plan for now.

"We have somebody in the works to do it, but TV said they would avoid us if we had this sponsor, and it's a gun manufacturer," Benson said. "We are not sure why that would be the case, but that's the information they are giving us. We have to choose whether we want to head down that road or not. We would hate to have good finishes and run in the top three and have TV avoid us for that reason.

"Originally, I said NASCAR had revoked that, and it wasn't. NASCAR called me Tuesday after I had said that they had shot it down," Benson added. "Apparently it is the TV. It is a very interesting scenario. We have had other (gun) manufacturers in there, and why it is an issue today, I don't know. I haven't had a conversation with them yet to get to the bottom of it.

"I think we are going to have to explore it. Money is money. That's going to have to be one of the things we have to do. But it's awful hard to sell a sponsorship if they know they are not going to show us. That's a tough place to be in for both sides."

Benson left Bill Davis Racing after clinching last year's championship, and he is seventh in points through four races. He has shown steady improvement with his new team. Benson finished 26th in the season-opening race at Daytona, followed by 12th at California and a ninth at Atlanta. Benson then finished fourth in Monday's race at Martinsville.

The series is off until the April 25 race in Kansas.

"Our year is going fine," Benson said. "We have been happy with our performances, maybe not so much with our finishes, but we are with a new team. Our performance has been good. Not great, but good. We are just going to have to be able to rack up some good finishes.

"Four weeks ago, we were 26th or 28th in points. Now we are seventh. That part of it looks good, but our performance has been better than that."

Benson said is scheduled to race twice this season at Berlin Raceway in Marne. He will head to Berlin after the June 13 MIS Truck race and compete in the evening's International Supermodified Association event.

Benson also will return to Berlin for The Chet, an Aug. 29th Late Model 100-lapper.

Yeah, gunbroker gets air time. Maybe the tv suits don't understand.

Sure would like to have a list of all the TV idiots that made this decision, with their emails if possible. They seem to be needin' an education in how not to run off business.

and yet they have no problems televising an automobile race with ads for tobacco, fast food, and alcohol- each of which kills more people than firearms.

Tobacco 435,000
Poor Diet and Physical Inactivity 365,000
Alcohol 85,000
Microbial Agents 75,000
Toxic Agents 55,000
Motor Vehicle Crashes 26,347
Adverse Reactions to Prescription Drugs 32,000
Suicide 30,622
Incidents Involving Firearms 29,000

This would be AWESOME!

If it is allowed by NASCAR, why wouldn't they do it? Because T.V. wouldn't cover them?

How would this work out if Benson WON the race?

"And here's the finish! Joe Schmo comes in second, and Jim Smith finishes third!"

"Hey, who won?"

"Here we have the actual footage of the second place winner crossing the finish line! Right behind him is Jim Smith in Third!"

"What about first?"

Here are tonights standings:

4th place: Bob Jones
3rd place: Jim Smith
2nd place: Joe Schmo

"Huh?"

Yeah, that would make for a happy audience. Watching the second place vehicle go around the track all night.

Now I'm thinking: Wouldn't it be awesome if Glock or Winchester fully sponsored a NASCAR driver? How come we never see Jimmy Johnson, Dale Junior, or Kurt Busch with a green and yellow "Remington" car, or a big S&W on the hood, or a Springfield Armory "crossed cannons" painted on it?

These mega corporations sometimes own so many companies that have nothing to do with each other that a call comes down from up top that makes no sense because they own a company competing against the "gun manufacture" in question. Either they didn't think of sponsoring a car or have no intentions of doing so. So, if they stop all others from doing it they don't have to spend their money there.

Then again it could just be an anti-gun sentiment, but then again why does gunbrokers get air time then?

Maybe Speed TV and Gunbrokers have some sort of connection we don't know about....

crap! I wasn't wearing my tinfoil hat when I wrote this and we all know those private orgs are more dangerous than the gov't!

Remington has partially sponsored cars in the past. Usually on the rear quarter panel.

RealTree is a major participant in the NASCAR world as is BASS ProShop (they sponsor entire races). So, it's okay to sell hunting gear but not the guns to hunt with?

It is not NASCAR saying they will not show it. It is the FCC, Bass Pro can be shown since they sell things other than guns. It is against FCC regulations to advertise guns. I am not saying I agree with this, it is just how things are.

Alcohol and firearm ads are, to the best of my knowledge, prohibited in broadcast TV. I'm guessing that cable-only channels are not subject to those restrictions.

Glock has been a part time sponsor for Michelle Theriault in ARCA and Busch East over the last several years.

Remington has been an associate sponsor for several Nascar teams since it showed its Remington Green NASCAR Cup car at the SHOT Show in 1996.

As you know, Gunbroker has sponsored cars most of this decade.

Somehow we're not getting the whole story. TV has gladly showed these cars for years. It's nothing new.

And don't tell me TV doesn't want to show guns. Look at half the prime time television programs on the air.

.

I'd be curious as to why Firearms ads are not permitted on TV. In the case of Tobacco, it was because they agreed to it as a part of a settlement.

If for some reason the Firearms industry hasn't conceded this right away in some settlement then I'd say there is a straight up Freedom of Speech lawsuit that needs to be filed.

Then somebody'd better warn the outdoor channel. I see Springfield Armory and Taurus represented there.

The Outdoor Channel is distributed via cable or satellite television providers and therefor not beholden to FCC regulations which only apply to television or radio broadcast over the airwaves.
