I put a part of this post on the Texas CHL Forum I belong to and decided I would use it as my first post on THR. I apologize for it being lengthy and long. I needed a place to say my peace. I hope there are other gun owners out there that see the need to finally support an effort that fights for our Constitutional Rights.
After 48 years I just became a NRA member and got my wife a membership as well. I never really saw the need to join the NRA as I thought life would go on as usual and my rights of gun ownership would never be in question. The time has finally come where I'm not so sure my rights will be here for myself and our future generation. Wish I could do more but for now it's a start.
I guess living in Texas most of my life and enjoying our freedoms, I never thought a day would come where our future freedoms would be questioned. Being a little older and a little wiser, I'm seeing our would change in a way I never thought possible. I know I don't like it and I'm going to do my part to support our rights. My grandfather was a tanker in WW1 and he put his life on the line to protect our way of life. Hopefully one day people will put down there gourmet coffee, turn off their iPhones after they pull into gated HOA homes and take a minute to think about what our servicemen and women did in their day to allow them to have the freedoms they have now.
I'm not a crazed gun nut dressed in camo that lives in a bunker watching black helicopters circle my compound. I'm just a typical American citizen that has enjoyed living in a free country for 48 years. It saddens me that a good portion of our society are more concerned about what's being reported on TMZ than what's happening in the Middle East, Syria or China. We allow gangs and cartels to invade our borders and do a hell of a lot more damage than what happened in Conn. The situation in Newtown was tragic but the shooter was dead set on making a statement one way or another. Being mentally impaired he probably shouldn't have had access to any firearms to begin with. Maybe the mother didn't understand the importance of a gun safe? We may never know. He somehow made a conscious decision to create a destructive event. Had he not had access to firearms he could have just as easily used his vehicle as a weapon and driven through a group of children at the school. He could have used many other ways to cause the destructive event to meet his objective. The media has said he was very intelligent.
If Adam Lanza was intelligent enough to play Call of Duty on Xbox and drive a car. I'm pretty sure he could have gotten on the Internet and learned how to build a pipe bomb. The Federal building in Oklahoma City was devastated years ago by a Ryder Rental truck full of fertilizer. We didn't stop people from renting trucks after the horrific attack and my cotton farm in West Texas still gets fertilized when needed. Mentally impaired people exist in our society and always will. If we do smart things like not give them access to firearms in the first place, I say that's a good start. I own firearms therefore I own a gun safe. Nothing's foolproof but it's what I feel is a responsible way to keep them out of harms way. As for the mentality impaired in our country, hopefully our nation will start taking note that our health system needs to provide better services for them and find more ways to help the parents with mentally impaired children/young adults.
But in this case a portion of the general population and especially the uneducated media have most likely never seen up close and/or shot a firearm in a safe environment. These folks get the idea that if we outlaw semi-auto weapons or all firearms that our children will now immediately be safe. Or if we limit magazine capacity all will be well. As gun owners we know we can reload multiple clips in micro-seconds no mater the capacity of the magazines. I'm a lot more worried about my child being abducted by a sex offender or run over by a mommy in a mini-van texting her house keeper than I am another school shooting. I'm just as worried about my child or wife being caught in the middle of a gang banger with something to prove when a drug deal goes bad at the mall or a movie theater. I'm all for my son's school having armed security or a principal with a CHL and good training. I'm not saying that's the answer but it's maybe a good start.
We put our LEO's in harms way because of drunk drivers on our public highways but we don't push harder for laws to protect their lives. We allow illegal immigrants to come into our country and treat it like a used condom. People text and drive and die, we still haven't seen a law that curbs that habit. I could go on and on, all of you in some way understand what I'm trying to say. Our proud Eagle is taking a beating. I hope someone see's that she needs some medical attention soon.
I'm grateful for of all the Texas and American men and women that put their lives on the line every day to protect our children, property and out proud state. Problem is there are not enough of them to be everywhere at all times when we need them. I'm grateful that the State of Texas allows me the privilege to protect my family when they are not available. I hope that privilege doesn't go away. I hope to one day to obtain a CHL that works in every state. If it requires more time, background checks and training, I'm willing to do the leg work to be approved in order to protect my family anywhere in our country.
Sorry about the long rant. I hope that one day our country wakes up and take the time to think about how fortunate we are to be living here and being able to have the freedoms our forefathers blue printed for this great nation. We as a nation need to quit pointing fingers and just pick up a shovel and hammer and rebuild our foundation.
