I haven't tried the RemOil for more than one thorough cleaning. I've heard similar things about Breakfree. I'll let you know how the RO works for me after I've gotten some more experience with it.

Congrats on the 870 purchase! I just got one myself. :)

Here's a picture of mine, along with my RRA AR15

I just joined the 870 Club a few weeks ago. Here's The Old Man in his new black tuxedo! I was worried about the original wood, so I ordered synthetic from the classifieds here on THR. Remington told me the born on date is 1951, but the barrel S/N matches the receiver, and the barrel has an 'RWW' date code. If I read that right, it's November, 1950.

I'll join the club.

Here is a 870 Wingmaster I picked up a while ago for $109 from the best gunshop in Minnesota - Gunstop. It came with the pictured original barrel with a Lyman "dial-a-duck" choke. I had planned to cut the barrel down, and I posted on THR for suggestions on how to do it.

I shot trap with the bulbous barrel a few times (admittedly I never patterned it  ), but couldn't shoot it as well as my 30" full choke Wingmaster. I think the LOP is a little funny for me with the aftermarket recoil pad.

As I've pondered bead sight installation, hacksaws and re-blue-ing, lo and behold, I stumbled into a Gander Mountain last week that was selling everything at 50% off to move.:) All the guns were already gone, but I picked up this nifty 20" barrel with iron sights and two Remchokes - one IC and one rifled for slugs. Now I've got a sweet little defense/slug gun.

Welcome to the 870 Club:)

'Tis a club that is millions strong, growing since the early 1950s- welcome aboard!

Get out your owners manual, fieldstrip your new family member and give it a thorough cleaning as per instructions. Pay particular attention to the chamber. Then lube properly and go try to wear it out. Repeat as needed...

(March 5th)

So, I'm guessing this is THE 870 club.

I'd like Jack on ice, por favor,
and a beer chaser (a pint of IPA, please).

Mine's an "870P". (No, not +p. Just P.)
Loaded now with 00 and slugs.

It'll do for "combat",
where "combat" is defined for me (YMMV)
as < 15 m. (Inside the perimeter.)

Bigga bada boom.

The family portrait; context is relevant.

me too

i joined about a week ago. i picked up a used wingmaster trap with a 30 inch modified barrel for 275.00 it has the raised comb that brings your eye right to the rib. it has beautiful wood with cool tiger stripes, and not a scratch on it. the previous owner must have really babied it, and i will continue to do so as well. the only thing i wish i could change is the choke. it still dusts em pretty good with the mod choke though. i dont know how to post pics, but i will try if i get a chance.

Upgrades.

Still have a heat shield on order. Should be here Friday. Then a Tritium bead.

And then some Ba/UU/R

Ordered sme Federal Tactical Low Recoil 00 buck 9 pellet earlier today. Supposed to pattern really good out of the 870. I hear either that or Hornady Tap blue hull. But it's like handgun ammo. Buy and test out the best loads for defense, and shoot practice with cheaper loads. S&B locally is about 6 and change for 10 rds. Same with some of the Remington stuff. I am still looking for some low recoil lightweight slugs. Have to go to the long gun outdoor range to shoot that stuff though. But if the 00 low recoil stays on the paper at 25 yds then it's good for HD and indoor stuff.

Just bought my first monday I can pick it up friday. I got it for deer hunting (never been yet). Can anyone recomend a decent rifled barrel for it? I priced them order only for 159 to 179 plus fees and taxes.

Can anyone give me a better idea on how to break the darn thing down? I can't seem to get the forend to come out :cuss:

Skud,

Can you offer more details of the problem?

I don't have the Express
(mine's an 870P, which may be different).

If you'll describe in some detail
(the more the better)
what you've done so far,
and about what you mean by
"I can't seem to get the forend to come out",
then someone will be along shortly to offer advice.

OK. First time breaking it down, it'll be a little stiff. Does it have a magazine to barrel clamp towards the muzzle, past the magzine knurled cap? If so, then it has to be loosened.

Then the cap should come off, and the barrel with it.

After that, the foreend should release if you manually stick the catches inside the receiver down with your fingers, then gently but firmy press down on the bolt itself. Should take just a little pressure, and then pull right off.

After that, there's 2 pins that hold the trigger assy in. Using a punch, tap those 2 pins out, and the weapon should be broke down. Clean thoroughly.

I started by unscrewing the cap on the mag, and pulled the barrel out. The manual then says push the action forward about 1/2 way, then reach inside the chamber and push the left shell catch and the forend should pull out. I can't seem to push anything inside the chamber that will actually let anything slide out. Should I put a few shells through this thing before I try to take it apart? I've heard that I should take it apart for a thorough cleaning beforehand...

Sorry I can't describe my problem any better, I'm currently at work :(

The manual is a little misleading....it says you just push the left shell catch, but my forearm won't come off just pushing in the left shell catch. I have to push both the left and right one for the forearm to slide off completely. I had the same problem when I first broke down an 870 for cleaning. Just reach inside the receiver from the bottom and push on each side with your fingertips until you feel something flex. Those are the shell catches you need to press in for the forearm to slide off.

Just joined the 870 Club!

I just picked up a Wingmaster 870 TB made in the 1960's from my favorite gunshop. It was gathering dust in the back because another customer asked them to hold it for him over a year ago. That customer never came back and the shop owner forgot about it. When the shop owner found out I was looking for a Wingmaster, he remembered it and decided to sell it to me since the other customer was a total flake. BTW, it's my first shotgun.

It came with a 30" full choke barrel as well as a 26" skeet barrel and is in very nice shape with no rust and only a few minor dings on the wood. It only takes 2 3/4" shells but that's not a big deal to me since I shot a 3" shell once out of an HK and don't really see the need to do it again. The carrier is very shiny (stainless steel?) and all solid, unlike the blued one with a cut-out on my friend's Wingmaster. The action cycles very smoothly, just as I've heard, and the wooden stock has pretty nice grains. I can't wait to try it out at the skeet or trap range (dunno yet which game I am gonna like better).

So, anyone know what the TB stands for? I don't see it in the current Remington catalog and my friend guessed "Trap Barrel" but it's just a guess.

T stands for Trap,BB, B for the grade of wood. I've a TB, most common of the letter grades.

A had slightly better wood than a field grade,B was better yet. They both had the impressed style of checkering.

C grade had very nice lumber and cut checkering. D grade had engraving over 50% of the receiver and F over all.

TBs are not rare, but no better pump was ever made for general shooting. Cherish yours.

Thank you for the information and I will indeed cherish this shotgun. I already bought some ammo and plan to use it up tomorrow (after I get my USPSA practice in ;) ). Of course, I plan to repeat the process as well.
