For a survival or self defense situation, what knife would be best for lashing onto a Bo or Jo staff?

I thinking of the following ideas:

A) USMC bayonet
B) M9 bayonet
C) USAF pilot survival knife (1970s issue)
D) Cold steel bushman

What do you guys think?

Since it already has a hollow handle, the CS.

As a matter of fact, a "walking stick" can be made with two pre-drilled holes and clips. When the hyenas come, pull your Bushman off your belt, pull out the clips, slide on knife, reinsert clips, voila. Instant short spear.

My thought is why carry a "lashable" knife at all? Carry the best knife you can afford and use it as a knife, not a spear point. You can always buy a dedicated spear head.

A field expedient hardwood spear is easily crafted with a good knife and the tip can be fire hardened to enable it to take on a least one pack of hyenas before needing replacement. :p

You want a real spear? Buy one.

Well then, a CS Bushman. Might as well make it easy on yourself. :D You can always carry a real knife in addition to your "legal" spear head disguised as a hollow handled knife..

The Randall survivor was designed to do this, it has a hollow handle and can be used to carry small survival needs i.e. fishing line and hook. My uncle did the initial tool work for the brass cap that the survivor uses. I wish I had the one he worked on, knowing him he sent it back in better shape than he got it.

Keep your knife in its sheath safe and sound for the next use.Sharpen the stick for a spear if you must.Don't chance losing your only knife by lashing it to a stick.tom.

I don't see much merit in lashing a knife to a stick to make a spear. The knife can be used to make several short spear/javelin. As has been said, you can fire harden the tips and keep the knife on your belt. If you're intent on this get a couple of cheap throwing knives so that you can split the shafts and lash the throwers in securely.

Step 1: Lash your shiny knife to a piece of elongated hardwood
Step 2: Throw makeshift spear into animal
Step 3: Watch animal run away with your shiny knife embedded in its flank
Step 4: Cry

;) Keep the blade on your belt and use the fire-hardened method. If you're really concerned, learn to knap rocks into cutting tools.

Honestly, you won't be able to throw your spear well at all because you have never practiced with it most likely and the balance will be odd.

Don't throw away your knife or lose it stuck in something, use your knife to make a spear then put it back on your belt.
