i just bought this arsenal sgl20 ak. here is the one i got. i have not received it yet but i ordered some steel bulgarian and romanian mags for it. i paid $630 for this one NEW. is that a good deal for these guns? I am an AK newbee, so i am not familiar with mags and modifications ect...

anyone have an opinion of what is better for this gun....synthetic or steel mags?

i know it is a modified SAIGA, but i am not totally sure what all is modified or if i need to modify any mags i feed it.

and do i need to get a "sighting tool" for it? ive heard AK sights need work sometimes.

anyway, i cant wait to get it and shoot it. seems like a nice gun for $630.

You should have a sight elevation tool in the cleaning capsule, the other end of that tool is a screwdriver.

The commie steel mags are cheaper and work perfectly fine.

Be warned, the paint on those rifle can be damaged by some solvents. Brake clean will probably make run like watercolor. CLP and Ballistol should be fine.

I've got it's cousin, the SLR107FR.

thanks briansmith. what about hoppes #9 or powder blast? thats what i use normally. so i shud go easy w/ solvent and clean more with oil? and are you talking about the paint on the metal? is that the finish? what do you think about the price i paid? $630 good price?

thanks.

$630 is reasonable for this gun, IMHO. They are very nice.

Any commercial gun cleaner should be OK on the paint. Many people use cleaners intended for other uses, like brake cleaner, and that may not be OK.

Finish is black paint over parkerizing. It's a good, durable process. The paint can be easily damaged but the parkerizing isn't.

An AK sight tool is a good idea. They can be had for under $10 from TAPCO and some miscellany Chinese imports. Doesn't matter much which one you get.

They use standard AK mags. Steel commie mags the way to go. Cheap and incredibly durable. Used surplus is fine. There are also new production Bulgarian steel mags that are great and can be found for about $15. The Bulgarian waffle mags, if genuine, are good mags and lighter, but not better in any other way. Avoid any US made magazines, none are as good as the combloc mags, and usually more expensive.

so should cleaning be done with mostly oil or CLP like on the muzzle break and other external areas? i figured an AK doesnt need over cleaning anyway right? i would imagine the carrier needs a good scrub with solvent and i have heard some people like to strip the paint on that part to make the gun look more authentic anyhow. i will not use corrsive ammo and i know people that do end up having to use hot soapy water to clean their gun.

...also i have heard that since the SGL20 was originally a SAIGA that it has a better finish than the other guns on the Arsenal line. is this true? and which Arsenals are SAIGAs? just the SGL series?

Stripping the paint from the bolt carrier actually makes the gun look LESS authentic. Some Chinese AKs were made with unfinished bolt carriers, but Russian units are always finished. Most who strip the bolt carries do it for the "bling" factor.

630 for this rifle is a steal IMHO. Where did you get it for that price? I bought an SGL 21-76 with the picatiny rails recently, haven't fire it yet I paid 805 for it directly from k-var.

I am really interested in buying the SGL 31 AK 74 ...the ammo is very cheap plus it's really the AK 74 that the russian military uses now days in the 5.45 ammo...and I'd like to won one of each the 47 in the 7.62 and the 74 in the 5.45.

the finish on this rifles however is a bit prone to scratches etc. I bought eh bulgarian mags from k-var for about 29 bucks each in the blakc and the Od green... great mags. fit perfectly and dont wabble. I recommend spending a few extra dollars for these bulgarian waffles -- they are worht it in my opinion.

i got the gun on gunbroker. i really like the steel bulgarian mags. they fit good and look good.

Arsenal cleaner

I discussed this with Arsenal here in Las Vegas and they suggest using Breakfree CLP ONLY painted areas. No Powderblast. I think this is on there web site also.

Good price, I bought one last month for $699. The Bulgarian polymer "Circle 10" mags are really good, but I bought a new Bulgarian surplus steel mag and those are really good as well for less. I've really enjoyed shooting mine, so let us know how you like yours.

BTW I got an SGL 21 and it didnt come with the cleaning kit. I have read that the new ones don't come with them.

Ditto here. Picked up an SLG-21 and no cleaning kit either.

Steel mags will work just fine in these rifles.

The SGLs come from Russia with a cleaning kit, but Arsenal separates them from the rifles.
Then they sell them separately to make extra $$$.
