And people say you need an AR to hit targets at 250+ yards, pffff...Shot a buck 90 minutes ago with my Norinco SKS at 250-300 yards away using the open sights. Simply just set the rear sight at the "3" click for 300 meters and aimed in the middle of his torso, he gave me a broadside presentation. Bullet entered right where I aimed and didn't exit, didn't bother looking for the bullet as it was dusk and I only had a short time to gut the deer. Anyways I manually chambered 1 round (I have a 30rd mag), steadied the gun against a light post, held breath, and slowly pulled the trigger, at the report I saw it kicked it hind legs up, then ran 25 yards away from me, stopped and peered back at me for 5-10 seconds before it collapsed, when I got to him, he was dead as a door nail. Didn't know this rifle had that kind of accuracy, to be honest.

No offense to you, but if you didn't know that you could make the shot due to a perceived shortcoming with the rifles accuracy potential, why then did you take the shot on a deer and risk a gut shot or something equally un-ethical???

steadied the gun against a light post
Where were you hunting that has a light post? LOL. Well at least you were out of the truck LOL
Just kidding man, nice shot.

Actually, almost any decent rifle will be fine out to 250-300 yards, even AK's. It's past that range that you are gonna have a hard time being consistent about hitting targets. And it is not really the weapon itself as much as it is the round (7.62x39). There are other variables as well, including the make and quality of the specific semi-auto as well as the specific brand of ammo you choose.

I had a paratrooper Norinco SKS that was respectable out to 200 yards or so. My Yugo SKS is even better, but it doesn't have a chromed bore and it has a longer barrel to aid in a little bit better velocity.

You want to see some lousy accuracy in your SKS/AK, shoot Wolf FMJ...

Yes you can consistatly hit a gong at 300 yards till the barrel warms up then you wont be able to hit a dam thing!

I've got a Yugo SKS and a Chinese SKS. I love both, but the Chinese one is my fave by far. The Yugo SKS with its grenade launcher and forward flip-up sight looks more like an evil assault rifle, but it also feels bigger, heavier, and clumsier. The Chinese one is easier to handle, and it feels like it was built more precisely than the Yugo. I get better groups and reliability out of it too using identical ammo.

Yeah, I didn't think the 7.62 soviet could drop a deer at 250-300 yards, whatever the actual distance was, but yeah the load ate em up pretty good. The FMJ performed excellent on him, no exit wound, just gained alot of respect for the 7.62 Soviet as well. Not saying if I had a Remington 700 in .270 that I still woulda choose my SKS, but now I'll have more confidence in this rifle which breeds good marksmenship.
