While one can argue both sides of the coin - you do understand why they do not sell the ss190 to the general public. If they did, the gun would have already been banned by now.

Who in there right mind would pay $450 for a box of 50 rounds. To my legal knowledge, the ss190 ammo cannot be purchased by civilians, only law enforcement, military. I dont even think class 3's can get it if I'm not mistaken.

Not true. It is not illegal to possess SS190. FNH just doesn't sell it to civilians (probably made a deal with the ATF so they could sell the PS90/5.7 commercially.)

Since the cops aren't going to sell it to you, the commercial supply is extremely limited. This results in its ridiculous price.

With 3 twenty round mags this gun offers tremendous fire power and lets you just spray the target due to low recoil and quick recovery.

Why settle for 20 rounds? Get the 10 round extender and carry around 30. :D

IMO, the biggest advantage the five seven has over traditional SD calibers is the SS190 armor piercing rounds. But at $300 for a box of 50 rounds, i would rather have a .50BMG based on those ammo prices. I like the concept of the gun, but it feels like a toy and has the ballistics of a .22mag. It would be fun to have the P90 but i would pass on the five seven, especially because of its not uncommon $900 price tag.

But, different strokes for different folks so i hope you enjoy your purchase.

Here is a pic of mine.

Lots of fun but I would not use it for self defense on purpose anyway. It is an amazing round some say it will set monkeys on fire at 200yds and some say it won't kill a bug a point blank range. I suppose it is somewhere between the monkey and the bug.
The comments about spraying down assailants don't help, they are unrealistic and only seem effective against an unarmed intruders. Just suppose you are standing in your hallway facing a known armed BG armed with a .45ACP, eight round, 1911, he just stole and is not to good with. You think he can afford to take a couple of your spraydown rounds in 5.7 in order to return a couple of his .45ACP rounds in the narrow hallway. I give you two hits before he returns fire with all eight and he hits you twice. Who goes down first you or the bad guy? If BG is not armed why would you spray them down. So this armed intruder story blows the spray and pray system away in the real world.
I have a G2 Contender with a 12" barrel in 5.7 for fun it has no other purpose than fun thats it just fun no bad guy shooting no bunny popin just fun.
If I can get a monkey to stay still at 200 yards I will try the fire thing. :)

It's an awesome gun!

It took a little getting used to for me. A friend(fellow shooter) had two of them a short time back. Not tooting my horn, but I wasn't nearly as skilled as I am now back when I shot His. It really didn't do much for me. Felt like a hot .22. Follow up shots are effortless with this thing. You can bang off five shots easily at a rapid rate and you WILL be on target w/o trying too hard(in most cases).

In late summer of this year, I craved it. Actually, my dad wanted it. We agreed to go halves, but I bought his half out! I'm glad I did! So far, over 500 rounds have gone through mine. It is VERY accurate and reliable. The SS 197SR is the perfect round for home defense. I trust this gun as much as my glock 19c and my makarov.

One thing should be made clear. You WILL need shoot n see targets with this gun. The shot holes are TINY. It'll have you wondering where they hit on a standard target.

Otherwise, load up and have fun with them!

I just bought one used of my budy. It is the older IOM model with rounded trigger guard.

I personally didn't buy it for self-defense and would not use it that way if given a choice. Heck I probably wouldn't have been interested in the gun/caliber if I didn't already have handguns in other, more accpeted, SD calibers.

I am a decent sized guy(6'2",170), and the grip is still a bit on the large side...it is definitely not comfortable in comparison to any of my other handguns. Kind of squared off in the back. I actually think the trigger is not bad at all....kind of reminds me of my XD45. A bit of take-up, with a clean break...easy to "stage" and feels good IMHO. Tne gun is veryy accurate, and recoil is low. Personally I think many people exaggerate this though, as it kicks harder than any .22 handgun I've ever shot. Recoil a bit less than 9mm, IMO.

I bought the gun mostly because I know the antis hate it, but I also would like to take some 100yd+ shots with it, and would REALLY like to handload for it down the line to see what kind of potential the round has.

I fully would not want to get shot by one, but I know that an expanded .45 HST is significantly WIDER than a 5.7 bullet is LONG, so even if the 5.7 makes a perfect 90degree turn inside target and plows through an equivelant distance of flesh to the .45, the 5.7 is still gonna cause a lot less damage... which makes me sleep well with a .45 by my bed, notsomuch with a 5.7.

Still I think it is a fun gun with a niche, and I really don't understand why people get soo heated over them. It's a fun gun if nothing less.

The 5.7 is very similar in woundinding ability to the 22 magnum. I have fired one, and found it to be accurate, as far as practical accuracy, not bench rest type accuracy, fast repeat shots, and very little muzzle rise. I also came back into battery very quickly, which is important to experienced shooters.

I doubt that as far a fifty yard shots on rabbits, it would be any more accurate than any other "service" type pistol, which is to say it wouldn't work for that purpose. The main constant in putting down an adversary in an armed confrontation is shot placement, and it's dependent cousin, penetration. It would seem that any round that would penetrate light body armor would pass all the way through a human body; not so. The military and service rounds for the 5.7, as well as a similar Chinese effort are designed to tumble shortly after imopact, usually around five inches. After this point, their paths are unpredictable, and penetration is very shallow. With commercial ammo, expansion causes the lightly constructed bullets to lose their jacket and go to peices(they are designed to do this, for varmint hunting). Their penetration is worse.

These small caliber, high velocity rounds can certainly kill, but it would take a lucky shot in a defensive shooting. I have killed many hogs that we raised on the farm for meat with a single .22 long rifle to the head, but if I go hunting, I always take my .44 magnum.

With all this said, everyone can't handle a "major" caliber weapon. They should carry the biggest caliber that they can hit effectively and repeatedly with. The 5.7 certainly has a place in this scheme of things. I would feel far better armed with a 5.7 than I would with any "pocket rocket" that i have ever fired, because I can hit VERY effectively with it, and very fast. The gun, and it's feel in the hand is far more important than caliber, but by the same token I still carry a 44 magnum myself. I can hit very fast with it, too, and it is exponentially more effective, more along the lines of a medium bore rifle than a handgun. The 5.7 is very similar in wounding effect to a 22 magnum, or a 22 long rifle. I hate to say it, but a good hi velocity .22 may well be better, because of the supeior penetration.

By the way, the trigger AND the controls suck.

I just came home with one today. I have almost pulled the trigger on acquiring one so many times that I've lost count. I did some trading and came home with a five-seven with a few other guns (SIG 226 DAK .357, and, M&P 340 .357). Having a PS90 it was only a matter of time.

Doc, if you haven't already you might want to take a look at some of the defensive rounds that have been developed for the 5.7 (Elite Ammunition). As the round is rather new in the grand scheme of things, I wouldn't count it out yet for more serious SD applications.

That said, I am not looking to mine for SD....yet.

Too big and way too expensive for me. Unless you've got a bunch of the SS190 laying around its basically a $1000 .22 mag pistol.

If I had a lot of money to blow, it would be a neat pistol to own. But for $1000, theres a lot of other stuff I would get.
