Just got my 1000 free bullets from Hornady

1000 .451 45 CAL 230 GR HP/XTP is what they sent me. i am looking around and have found data for similar rounds but wondered what you guys were shooting them at. Specifically what OAL works best with this round. 1911 of course .

It varies from gun to gun, bullet to bullet. In my 1911, 1.245" is ideal for a 200gr. LSWC, but HP jacketed bullets require a slightly longer OAL to feed properly. All you can do is work up some rounds with varying lengths and see if your gun will cycle with them. I've read several posts with 1.250" as a popular OAL, so you might start there.

I load my Win HPs at 1.230, feed in every 45 I've tried em in.

shouldn't you field strip the gun. drop a bullet (the one your working the OAL up for) into the chamber. then measure with a rod from the muzzle to the tip of the bullet. then remove the bullet. Reassemble the gun, and remeasure the rod to the bolt face.

then you would subtract the 1st measurement from the 2nd. then back off another .02 and that would be your OAL? I would think you should do this with every kind of bullet you are going to use. they all seem/look different for pistols. Of course it would seem that the magazine would also play a factor. so you would want to make some dummy rounds to load and cycle through the pistol.

This is a guess. I am new to reloading so do not take the for positive. this is a guess.

I am going to start reloading for my 9mm next week. I am going to try this out.

That would be great, except if the pistols barrel is long throated, the rounds might be too long to fit in the magazine.

Determining seating depth for an auto pistol is not based on the bullet contacting the rifling. That's fine for most rifles, but may or may not work at all for pistols.

Seating depth, or OAL for pistols, is based on whether the ammo fits in the magazine and will feed or not.

The factory XTP's I checked are loaded at 1.235 O.A.L.. They should know where they feed well at.

I loaded them and Golden Sabers at that O.A.L. and they worked very well. I load the 230 Gr JHP at 1.245 and it works very well there. The Speer 200 Gold Dot is factory loaded at 1.215 and I loaded some of those at that O.A.L. and they fed great.

That's the 'rule of thumb' I've been using for the .45ACP I reload for my 1911A1. YMMV.
