It's been awhile since I posted here. As some of you know I applyed for a IL FOiD card
some time back. I got it in the mail today.

Well I haven't been around firearms since '96 although I have shot airguns. Anything I will need to get before buying my first gun? I know I need a carrying case but other then that?

Go read up on the IL laws.

Check out the cities around you. Quite a number of cities routinely violate the Constitution (Morton Grove, Chicago, etc) by making it illegal to have a handgun in your home. Be especially careful about Chicago. I was once stopped by a Chicago cop I believe because he saw a S&W bag in my vehicle. He paid a lot of attention to the rear area of my jeep.

Good thing I don't live anywhere Cook County. As far as the S&W bag a perp could have broken in your car thinking you had guns.

It play it safe I'm not going to have gun decals placed anywhere. Plus the carrying case will be one of those that look like somthing else.

Depends where you're at. Most anywhere outside of the upper right corner of the state should have no additional restrictions on ownership beyond what IL already has.

No Class 3, so don't even ask.

One day wait for long guns, 3 for handguns (despite the fact that IL has an instant check that really is pretty quick).

Well I live in Madison County and I know about the Class 3 not that I could ever afford or be willing to put up with the rules.

I'm kinda looking for a .38 and somthing in a .22 to start out with. Maybe later get somthing in a rifle.

Where do you live again? Near Peoria? If you want to get together and shoot at a fairly nice outdoor range, let me know well ahead of time and we can go to my club. It's in Springfield, but that's not a bad drive.

No Class 3, but you can rent machine guns at Law's range which is pretty near you if I recall correctly.
http://www.lawoutdoorrangeandguns.com is in Chandlerville, near Virginia.

Do NOT screw around with the waiting periods. They DO put people in prison in this state both for getting guns too soon and for allowing their friends and neighbors to take possession too quickly. It happened in, I believe, Lake County last year. Guy sold an SAR-1 to his neighbor he'd known for years and let him take it that day. Figured it was only going next door and he knew the neighbor was a good guy. Went to prison. Is now a felon. WAIT unless you're practicing civil disobedience.

Do NOT have a loaded gun on your person or in your car outside your property, a range, or a hunting situation. You MAY transport legally on your person or in your car as long as the gun is unloaded and in a case. Those are the only requirements. You can have a loaded magazine right next to it in the case, but no rounds in the gun. The case can be any case, box, container, etc. that completely encloses the gun. A holster is NOT a case. A fanny pack, day planner, CD case, backpack, cardboard box etc. would be a case under the law.

Have fun! And join as many pro-gun orgs as you can. CCRA and Concealed Carry Inc. are the most effective, but that's not saying much in Illinois.

My first guns I'm planning on buying from a gun shop anyway. How did the law find out he sold a gun without the waiting period?

Ok I have a problem here. I want something in a first gun that doesn't cost me an arm and leg to buy or to shoot. Also would prefer a handgun so I can use it for both plinking and defence. I am planning on getting more guns but my first gun will be the only gun I'll have for awhile.

I'm looking to spend $200 to ~$300. Go a head and laugh but what can I get for this price in a handgun? A .357/.38 revovler will do and I'm willing to buy used. I will also be happy with a .22 if that's all I can get and I'm wanting a .22 anyway.

Illinois' got no "evil gun" rules, beyond the Class 3 thing, so we've got no allowed/verboten lists like Califnordia and Mass.

$2-300 will get you a Makarov, and lots of ammo, a used Ruger auto, a used Smith or Taurus revolver, lots of things.

You know the Makarov is sort of on my list since ammo is rather cheap and I've heard that they are good guns for the money. What about www.firestorm-sgs.com and www.eaacorp.com ? the Comanche and Winicator revolvers are within my budget. The prices they go for I could have a .22 and a .357/.38 by the end of this year.

I would also would like to have an AK/AR type semi-auto but that will have to wait until next year.

The S&W bag holds a set of jumper cables, a cheater bar, and no guns or gun stuff. I have a vinyl/plastic shield for the lack of a better term that prevents anyone from seeing what is in the back of my vehicle. The cop could see the S&W bag this time because the tailgate was wide open, the tool chest was wide open, the S&W bag was wide open to get the cheater bar, and the spare was laying on the ground. I was trying to remove what was left of the flat tire from the vehicle without getting run over. The tire was in three pieces. Why oh why can Chicago truck drivers never realize they are losing foot high chunks of 1/4 in. sheet metal off the top of the truck?
