Hypothetical:
What if there was a law that restricted ONLY one handgun per person, may it be a revolver or a pistol.

What manufacturer would your choice of that one handgun be from?

In that case ( only one gun ) would have to be for hunting and self defense.

Smith & Wesson Combat 19/.357

It would be my Kahr E9. Small enough to carry, accurate enough to hit what I aim at, and all steel for durability...

Beretta 96FS in .40 S&W good HD round favored by law enforcement. All blued steel body or stainless if you prefer. Accurate, reliable, and sexy. Leave hunting to your rifles.

It would be a high quality 1911 of some sort. High quality does not mean high dollar. Just something that is reliable and accurate.

Just Jim: Its a hypo to see what company people
really prefer.

That's not what your poll is going to reveal though.

Example: Let's say you have someone who really likes Croatian Metal Company's pistols (e.g., the XD-45 sold by Springfield)... that's their favorite gun... but:

1) There is no .22 conversion kit available
2) They want the flexibility of being able to run really light and really heavy loads without changing springs.
3) They don't want to always have to chase brass around for reloading
4) They are worried that, in a world of false shortages, they may not be able to buy enough ammo so they don't like the short lifespan brass has when fed through an autoloader.
5) Unknown long-term reliability.

You can only have one gun... so instead of buying what you really want you compromise... maybe switch to a Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull and buy a handful of .22lr adapters because it's more of a "do everything" gun... fairly concealable, can fire .22 rimfires, can fire underloaded .45LC or really heavy .454 casull.

Oh man i never thoght chosing just one would be so hard! Is it just one handgun for the rest of your life? Or is it just one handgun at a time? Like, i can only own one, but if i wanted to trade it or get rid of it and get a different one, could I?

Anyway, id probably get a glock 26, just because i carry a glock 30, but i like the 9mm round and it is readily available anywhere, and i still get 10 rounds in the standard mag, just like my g30, but also have high cap mags available. Its pretty well rust resistant, and glocks are very reliable out of the box and feed pretty much any brands of ammo.

Although i had a pretty tough time deciding between that and a kahr mk9 and a springfield stainless 1911. Both are pretty guns and reliable (the kahr after break-in) and i love the heft of metal guns. Even the g26 has shortcomings IMO where the kahr and springfield excel, but i guess the glock is just more practical for me.

Ruger sp101 (38/357) 3" barrel. Easy to clean, reliable, variety of SD and hunting ammo, very strong (long life), etc. Not my favorite gun to shoot, though.

same as terry and for the exact same reasons. My 3" Sp101 is the last gun I'd ever get rid of. It'll do anything that I want.

Why not just ask what company is the best?? I think the problem for me is I have some nice old guns that are not made any more. I would choose one of them before most of the new guns because I have a history with them and know they run well.

There are alot of good new guns out there but I haven't spent 30 years shooting them and getting to know them.
