... with Tom Cruise and Jamie Fox.

First off, I thought it was a great movie by Michael Mann. Very entertaining.

However, I think I spotted a mistake and was wondering if anyone else noticed. At the end of the movie, after Jamie Fox has picked up Tom Cruise's USP and Tom has taken the S&W from the guard: In the final scene, it looks like the S&W is a full size, with a .40 bore, which would make it a 1006. Even if it is a 4506 (much more common), both are single stack. When he drops the mag to reload and is out of ammo, the mag hitting the ground looks like a double stack mag for a 9mm or .40. Did anyone else see this?

been some time since I saw the movie. I thought it looked like a 4006 or a 4043, dont remember what the hammer looked like to tell if it was a DAO or not. that would be a 11 rd dbl stack mag in 40 sw.

You don't actually see him take it. You just see the dead guard and his holster is empty.

It seems to me that he grabbed one of the reloads for HIS piece, realized it wouldn't fit, and dropped the magazine, then the gun later.

I like how the director didn't spell everything out and left some stuff for us to figure out.

To tell you the truth, I took a bathroom break right during that part (lol), so I'm not sure if they explicitly show Cruise taking the guard's gun or not. It is implied afterward though, if it is not shown. It is after the car wreck, where Cruise runs off before the cops get there. When he enters the building where the DA works (his final target), he has a full size all stainless S&W by the time he makes it to the correct floor. As Jamie Fox gets there (later) he observes the dead guard on the bottom floor, and there is a zoomed in shot on the guard's empty holster, implying that Tom took his gun.

There is a nice, big, clear profile shot of the S&W at the end of the movie. The slide is too long for it to be anything other than a 1006 or 4506, but the mag dropped is a double stack mag.

Great movie anyhow... it is Hollywood where nothing is perfect, and Micheal Mann does work that is second to none, IMO... HEAT, Last of the Mohicans, etc.

No he didn't have any more mags left from what we could see. My interpretation of him grabbing for one was that he grabbed for it out of sheer habit and training, not even thinking about the fact that he was no longer shooting his USP and that he was apparently out of mags anyway.

brad cook

Yeah. He dropped the mag from the Smith (mag hitting the ground was empty, appeared to be a S&W mag, just for the wrong gun), THEN he reached for another and didn't find one.

I didn't really see any incosistancy in the movie. It was pretty solid thorughout. The Bar scene was a little played up, but I suppose it's possible. People do look the other way or freeze up when somthing happens unexpectedly.

that movie was awesome, i saw it when it came out about a year ago....

to be perfectly honest with you, at the time when i saw that movie, i didn't know as much about guns as i do now, so i wouldnt know about that little mistake you pointed out... i guess ill just have to take your word on it =)

Thanks to my preference to getting my movies in 750mb chunks instead of DVDs, I was able to go watch the sequence in slow motion:

Vincent gets a visual on Max.

Lights go out.

Max moves to the side while firing at Vincent who is firing where he saw Max when the lights were on.

Both fire to slidelock. Vincent remains determined. I now see that he attempted to mozambique Max through the door, from the bullet holes that appear. Max however shot through the glass repeatedly and apparently tagged Vincent a few times.

Vincent drops the current empty magazine. We hear it hit the ground.

Vincent makes a grab for a new magazine.

Vincent brings his hand up to the frame and it is empty.

We see and hear a magazine bouncing on the floor. (second sound of a magazine whopping the floor) It is a doublestack and I see the brass of a bullet near the top. I believe it is loaded.

Hmm... I will watch this sequence again when I get a chance. I only recall one mag hitting the floor. Thanks.

IMO any small mistakes in the rest of the movie are far out weighed by Cruise's execution of the "Mozambique" in the alley. What with all the dumb stuff we have to put up with in the movies. That was a thing of beauty :D

I thought the same at the time, and was wondering if anyone in the know could confirm whether the depiction was a correct execution of the tactic or not.

I believe he dropped the Smith mag, went for a spare mag out of reflex but he only had USP mags so he drops it, knowing he's defeated.

And yes, the hey homey scene is awesome.

AH ok...so he did indeed have a USP mag left but I guess he realized after grabbing it that he was no longer shooting his USP.

I could be wrong but....

Ain't it bad juju or something to have the term,"Mozambique"(reffering to the drill) and the word execution in the same post :p !?

The DVD has a bit about the combatives training Cruise took in one of the bonus features. Can't remember the instructor. I think there's a thread on THR somewhere but a can't seem to find it.

berry,berry bad juju :D :D :D

P.S. Actually, it was more like a combination Speed Rock and Mozambique Drill. If that makes any sense to you.

I thought it looked more like a,"Hammer drill" ......

With a reeeeeeaaaaaally fast follow up head shot :) :neener: ! Wich would be equal to the,"Mozambique"......Is this basically what the "Speed Rock", is?

He was grabbing for a USP mag out of instict. I am watching it now.

Great movie. Lives up there with HEAT and Ronin for me.

Chris

The speed rock is his first move from surrender, as he draws and fires from the exaggerated rearward lean. Just as soon as he clears the holster. The lean is supposed to increase the distance between you and the attacker and elevate the muzzle to place rounds center mass.

Take a rearward step with the strong foot and it becomes the step back. For increased stability and improved weapon retention. That's the plan anyway.

There are several variations and as many claimants as to who invented the technique(s). And whether or not its use will save your life in an emergency or get you killed.

Anyway it sure looks smooth on screen.

Just watched it again... forgot the most important part! You gotta say " Yo, homie, that my briefcase." or it won't work.

What you are seeing is an orange magazine follower.

WasrJoe gets the cupie doll.

I have a big a$$ tv and I am currently watching the move and the magazine that is dropped is an empty double stack showing the orange follower. I guess it is the mag from the Smith he is shooting after all.

I also like how before that he just kind of casually walks out surveying the situation, not at all worried by these two bit thugs. In reality Tom Cruise seems like kind of a fruit but damn if he's not a total badass in that movie.
