Just took my new GP100 to the range.

What a great experience. The first revolver I owned was a 2" Taurus 605. It wasn't much fun to shoot, The GP100 (6", blue, .357) shoots .357 mag rounds like a dream. The .38's I shot feel like .22 cartridges.
The only thing I would like to do is replace the front sight with some kind of high visibility sight. My eyes are not as good as they used to be, and probably never were.
How big a job is this? Do I need to take it to a gunsmith? Any recommendations as to what kind of sight would be best?

Try a Millett front sight replacement. It's easy to install and bright orange on the front face (easy to see). I have one on my GP100, and it's great. I had a 6 inch GP100 and I agree, it handled .357 like it was nothing. Then I got the itch and traded it for a 4 inch GP100 which I really like, especially since I put on the Millett front sight. To replace your front sight you do not need a gunsmith. If you look at your gun with the barrel pointed at you (make sure it's unloaded) there is a hole just above the bore with a metal pin in it. Just take a small screw driver and push the pin toward your rear sight and pull up on your front sight. With the pin pushed in your front sight will lift off. Takes about 5 seconds. I would recommend a fiber optic front sight. They are real easy to see. I purchased a fiber optic sight from Midway USA. Mine is a Marbles fiber optic sight. They are listed as Marble's Ruger Super Redhawk 44 Magnun fiber optic front sight .332 height. They come either Green or Orange. Even though these are listed for a Super Redhawk they work for GP100 too. Do a search for Ruger sights. Here is a link-

Ruger makes a sight for the Super Redhawk with a red plastic insert that will fit the GP100s. It's identical to the sight you have now but with the insert.

Excellent choice on the GP100. I bought the same model a couple years ago, used for $300.00. It's incredibly accurate and fun to shoot. I have the Millett front sight as well, which provides an excellent sight picture, but now I'm tempted to order one of the Marble fiber optics as recommended above.

I love my ruger GP-100. 4 in blued model shots my .357 reloads (gotta love 2400) into ragged one hole groups. I found mine in a pawn shop for $125 (it had a broken rear sight). Bought it and replaced the sight for $5 with a part from egunparts.com. My best buy ever.

Which Marble Sight Do I Order?

They are all listed for the Super Redhawk. I realize there's only a few thousandths difference in the height of the various sights, But I'd like to get as close as I can to the original sight height.
Of course I could just pull the existing sight off and measure the height with dial calipers.

The .332 height sight is what I use on my GP100. I shoot 158Gr. bullets at 1200 fps and this height works great. Not sure about the other sight heights or different bullet weights. If you purchase one of these sights please let us know how you like it.

I can endorse the plain old red-insert front sight blade for the GP100 (Ruger catalog number RFS), which JohnKSa mentioned. Costs about $10 and pops right in. Same sight as on the Super Redhawk. Gives a fine, clear picture.
