Just what exactly has the NRA done for me?

In summary:

1. I dropped my membership because disliked the chicken little junk mail. I also had the impression that they shopped my name & address to marketers. (No proof, I probably ordered from Brownell's or something). My friends I spoke with felt the same way.

2. The NRA has done way more good than harm over the years. Their education program is reason enough to support them. The power of a lobbying group is a function of the size of its membership. Look at the AARP.

The thread reminded me that 1. isn't a good enough reason to not have membership (& why not see if you can get off the lists rather than drop the membership) and 2. is a very valid reason to join.

3. - not related to the thread - is that with all the recent shootings and the near certainty that the Dems will control the Congress & White House & SCOTUS possibly ruling that 2ndA is militia only - some kind of bans are going to be proposed. We'll need all the help we can get.

About 6 years ago, my G/F's 7 year old son was exploring his Grandpa's garage. There was lots of neat stuff there that had recently been brought over from the house of a recently deceased uncle. No one had gone through the goodies yet.

In this pile of household stuff, the boy found what looked like a shaving kit. You got it: the kit contained a Smith & Wesson snubbie with ammo and a holster, ready to go. At this point Eddie Eagle kicked in.

The boy stopped,
Didn't touch,
Left the area
And got an adult.

The gun had belonged to a great great uncle and is now in my safe awaiting the young man's 18th birthday.

The NRA gets my buck.

"Nonetheless, I don't see anyone yet who has chided their fellow NRA members for their poor showing in this thread."

I'm a bad, bad boy.

There, you happy? Or do i have to spend my days at the keyboard issuing rebuttals to posts everytime the GOA sends out one of its misguided alerts? What is this thread anyway, a referendum or something? The side that gets the most posts wins? Not likely.

I'm glad RH has a way with words and the energy to post them. Then I don't have to. I'm a bad, bad boy. But I repeat myself.

Forgot to post the NRA FAQ about stopping the mailings.

www.nramemberservices.org/faq.asp

Q: How can I reduce the amount of mail I receive from the NRA?

A: Simply email us at [email protected] or dial 800-NRA-3888 and request to be placed on the "Do Not Promote" list. This will significantly reduce the amount of mail you receive without affecting important mailings, magazine service, or your membership renewal.

What does the GOA have anything to do with me? I'm not a member of the GOA, either. Or are you saying that I think NRA members MUST spend their time writing rebuttals to another gun rights organization, and if they do not, the NRA isn't worth joining?

I'm rather surprised at the lack of reading comprehension here. I have made it quite clear what I was talking about.

I thought it was a thread discussing "just what exactly has the NRA done for me." Apparently, you consider youself one of the NRA members I pointed out that was castigating other NRA members who felt they had poor experiences.

From my first post in this thread: I read this thread to get information on the good of the NRA with the thought that maybe I can spend my few saved pennies on something worthwhile

Slugless,

Because of your input and the input of NRA members who wish to see others join, I have set aside $35 for a one year membership to the NRA. I'm only getting a one year membership because I can't afford more at this time. If I truly wish to do all I can, then I can see that joining the NRA can help not only myself but others.

No point in wasting more time on you.

You made this personal first, pal. Not me.

Titus, your link will allow me to give you credit for signing me up and I save ten bucks?

Thank you, I will do so when I get my next paycheck.

Sage,

I've read through some of your stuff and can completely identify with where you are coming from.

I'm a pilot and aircraft owner, and as such I belong to Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association (AOPA) as well as Experiemental Aircraft Association (EAA). Neither organization is perfect, but what both do is promote general aviation through education, training and advocacy. Both are powerful lobbying forces in Congress.

Not too long ago, the President Open Borders administration proposed hefty user fees for general aviation--in spite of GA folks already paying hefty taxes on every gallon of avgas. Kinda like a "federal tax on bullets," if you will. Both AOPA and EAA lobbied like hell to fight it. So far, we're winning.

And when we win more than we lose, it makes it easier to overlook some of the things I disagree with them on.

Even though I used to work for the NRA's adv/marketing/pr agency, I do not agree with everything about the NRA.

But, the NRA wins a helluva lot more than they lose, I still have my guns, more states than ever have CCL, the asinine assault weapons ban was allowed to expire, Eddie Eagle is getting in more and more schools (especially private schools), and Congress as a whole recognizes and respects the power of the NRA's membership.

That makes it a lot easier for me to overlook some things in which I disagree with them over.

A friend of mine was commenting the other day at work, "If the NRA had 50 million members instead of five million members, even the media wouldn't dare broach the subject of gun control."

Every organization will have members that you like and dislike. I join for the goal of having five million fellow gun owners by my side.

Glad you're gonna sign back up.

Jeff

First time, to my knowledge, that anyone ever decided to join the NRA as a way to take a slap at me. Maybe I've just invented the acupuncture technique for recruiting?

Smart friend.

Do you have a preferred method, Robert?

:D

If the NRA had 50 million members
The power of a lobbying group is a function of the size of its membership. Look at the AARP.

The AARP has 30 million members. Their lobbying power is outrageous. Look at how successful Social Security reform has been...

I had a congressional staffer tell me "When the NRA coughs, Congress sneezes. However, when AARP gets the sniffles, Congress gets pneunomia."

NRA - 4 million members
AARP - 39 million members

You want to see a Congressperson soil themselves ??
Tell them that AARP is on the phone and they're mad at him....

I am not joining the NRA to spite you, I'm joining the NRA in spite of you.

Yes. Good point, TexasSkyhawk. I'm now grateful for the opportunity to put my money where my mouth is in this way.

Before I joined THR, I was very politically inactive, I guess I could say. Since joining, I've begun sending written letters to my representatives and learned more about my civil rights in general and carried the argument to others in my life. I had passionate views on government and so on, but no direction. I guess I need to look at this experience as another way to more fully express my concerns over what's happening in our country.

I thank most all you again for your positive contributions. I'll bookmark this thread and keep you all updated on when I get my membership card in the mail! :)

There's a great line in an old classic Charlie Daniels song that goes something like, "And we may have done a little bit of fighting amongst ourselves--but you outside people best leave us alone. Cause we'll all stick together and you can take that to the bank" (In America

Pretty much sums up how I feel about my membership in NRA.

Your politics may be different than mine and your religious views may differ from mine. But on the Right To Keep And Bear Arms, we'll all stick together and Congress can take that to the bank.

Got my NRA card and baseball cap in the mail today!

I owe a big thanks to Titus and I am extremely grateful for all he's done for me.

Too bad my car's in the shop... gotta wait a while before I can put the bumper stickers on. :)

This is better than Dallas. I don't think I've ever seen so many opinions attacked in one place before.

Everybody feel better?
