I recently purchased a Kahr PM40 and love it. However, I just developed a problem.

I load the magazine, insert it firmly into the pistol, pull the slide all the way back and release it to load the first round... and it stops. The slide stop is locked into the slide and I have to release the stop to load the first round. It is like it thinks the magazine is empty.

It works fine, other than that, but I'd hate to need that first round in a hurry. Any thoughts on the cause?

I just bought a pm9 and it does this occasionally. If reloading in a hurry the slide will be locked back after the first mag anyway, insert mag press slide stop. I carry chamber loaded.

Make sure your slide stop/takedown lever in inserted completely into the handgun. I had this problem the first time I disassembled my PM9. I found that I had to make sure to give the slide stop a quick push just before seating to make sure it seated completely and locked into place.

Eureka!

Thanks Red! That was it.

I knew it had been loading properly for 150 rounds at the range Saturday. When I tried to remove the slide stop/takedown lever, it was seriously stuck. I had to press very hard on an anvil to get it to move, then lever it out firmly but carefully. Once out, I noted that it was dry. I had forgotten to re-lube it after cleaning. A little Militec-1 and it went back in smoothly and all is now working well.

Thanks! This forum is better than a stack of old gun magazines! :D
