Last Monday I took my Kel-Tec P-11 back to the factory for the THIRD TIME because it PHYSICALLY BROKE when firing. Fortunately, all 3 times were on the range. I let them know, politely, but in no uncertain terms that I was NOT happy with the weapon, and could they please fix it so I could sell it.
Well, a few minutes later, out comes the gunsmith and asks me, since the receptionist told her I was going to sell the weapon when they got it fixed, would I rather have them just refund me the purchase price instead?!!
I said I most assuredly would, but then we got bogged down in the fact that I had bought the gun some 5 years ago and didn't have the original receipt for it with me. They wouldn't refund the money without the original receipt. Understandable, but vexing. OK, just fix it and let me worry about selling it.
Oh, BTW, I have a P-40 conversion kit that I bought from you right here, that has never worked. Would you be willing to buy that back, since you undoubtedly have a record of its sale? Well, they'd look it up and see....
A few minutes later she comes out and tells me that they couldn't locate the sales record, but the manager said they would issue me a check for $175.00 for it, if that was acceptable. Since that's what I paid for it, I quickly agreed, and handed them the kit like it was a hot potato.
About a half hour later, they come out with a BRAND NEW P-11 that they had put my old serial number on, saying that since the frame was one of the old ones (~24,000) they had simply given me a completely new pistol, which they had just test fired, and was working perfectly.
I must admit, I was impressed! I now have a NIB pistol for sale, rather than a somewhat worn carry piece.
In a brief moment of insanity (seems to come more and more often) I thought about keeping the P-11, but when I compared it with my PT-145, it's only about a half inch shorter and thinner, with about an inch less butt. On my old and somewhat large frame, there's no significant difference in concealability between the two. And the PT-145 holds 11 .45 Hydra-Shoks as opposed to 11 9mms, plus has a much shorter and lighter trigger pull.
If Kel-Tec's pistols were as good as their legendary warranty service, they'd make Sigs look like Lorchins!
Of course, they'd still have crummy triggers.
