greetings
I presently use 124grain hydrashoks as my carry ammo in my P11.
Anybody see a problem with going to 147 grain considering the size of the gun.

I don't claim to be an ammo expert but from what I've read, a lighter HP bullet may be more effective in a short barreled pistol like the P-11. A lighter bullet should get more velocity from a short barrel than a heavy bullet and contribute to more reliable expansion. Would be interested in the wisdom of some experts on this topic.

alamo said it well. The heavier the bullet, the more barrel is needed to accelerate it while keeping the internal pressures within the limits of the design.

Note that the "super" bullets are considerably lighter than 115gr. RBCD, for example, has a 9mm 60gr bullet coming out of a P-11 at 1,776 FPS and 420 FPE.

I use 115 grain HP in my P-11 based on what I've read on the subject. I believe that is the lightest regular HP ammo, excluding the kinds Blackhawk mentioned.

Go to ktog.org

It is the Kel-tec owners group and they have many, many opinions on the P11's ammo question.

These guys know what's what with the weapon.

They even have a guy who overloads his rounds on purpose, pushing the envelope, to find out where the limits are for the pistol.

I have the P40 and it is very tempermental.

Kel-tec is coming out with a carbine in .223 called the SU 16 or Sport utility 16.

It looks sweet. It's not on the website yet but its at the shot show and the ads have hit the magazines now.

It takes AR15 mags (I believe) and it's foregrip folds down into two pieces that become a bipod. I'm expecting a price in the 400-450 range.

I agree with alamo and Blackhawk about staying with the 115 gr for the Keltec.

I have shot "quite a variety"... , for carry my criteria is ammo HAS to be reliable with platform, accurate for quick follow up, prefer low muzzle flash. Can't find all the data but the USA JHP is published at 1225 fps ...my chrono showed 1055, 1049, and 1061--average being 1055. The 115 STHP was very very similar, a bit quicker and less deviation, can't find the data.

I'm playing with some other loads. Gonna try some 115 grainers, from a 4" tube supposed to do 1300~1400 fps...low muzzle flash...( want to see what actually happens from a 3.125" tube)just had some setbacks with the STHP and increase of muzzle flash with last 300 rds...just want to investigate a bit...And gonna have some loads made up to fit a need.

Keep us posted on your P11 ammo work. As a wise man recently said, 'one experiment is worth a thousand guesses' (or something like that).

When talking bullet weights in short barrels, most people want reliable expansion. I think that's low on the list of priorities anyway, but especially so in a little gun like the KT. It's more of a hole poker than a ballistic performer, and all the bullet weights poke pretty good holes.

Reliable function comes first.

Not that I want to stifle the research and development of high performance belly gun loads, mind you.
