Hi everybody. I was just browsing the internet doing some gun research and Google kept bringing me to this sight when i typed in a new search, and most of you seem fairly knowledgeable so I decided to join up.

I am seriously considering buying a Kel-Tec PLR-16. This gun will be a fun gun basically. I am not considering this gun for home defense use or a car gun, just a range toy and likely a big game hunting back up rifle. Have any of you shot one? What did you think? Would you recommend this gun? I am nervous because Kel-Tec to me seems to be cheaper than the guns i usually like, yet it seems to have very good capability for what I will be using it for.

I am also looking for any input on accessories you guys like for it. Thanks in advance!

Wford,

Welcome to THR.

I use to own a PLR-16. If you want it for fun, then it is worth the money. I had a blast with mine. It is LOUD and the muzzle flash (aka - flame thrower) is very impressive at night. It has surprisingly light recoil and is very accurate. I recommend the railed forearm, flash suppressor, and sling point.

I hear that Kel-tec has a good warranty if you run into issues with it. Mine ran great.

As far as it filling the role of a back up rifle on a big game hunt......I dont know. While it is light and accurate, I would think a big bore revolver in a magnum cartridge would be more fitted to back up duty while hunting large animals.

I got mine from CNN for $400 NIB. Good thing about it is if you already have an AR, it can use the same magazines. I used a 20 round PMAG most of the time and it worked well. I really wanted to use the PLR as a home defense/truck gun, but it was just way too loud to be practical in those applications. If they made one in 9mm that took Glock 18 33 round mags, I would probably buy two.

Thanks for the response sapper. With the accessories you mentioned, are those all the kel tec made accessories? also, what is cnn?

Welcome to THR as well.

Yep, Sapper771 about summed it all up. The PLR-16 is very loud, but one of the funnest range guns I own. I believe Sapper771 meant he bought his PLR-16 at CDNN ( http://www.cdnninvestments.com/ ). That's where I bought mine as well about four years ago. I shoot it with 30 and 20 round AR mags. All the accessories I put on mine (the sling, the muzzle brake, the handguard and the deflector handle) are by Kel-Tec (just go to Kel-Tec's website: http://www.keltecweapons.com/store/plr-16-and-plr-22-accessories/ ) (The red-dot scope and rubber grip I bought somewhere else). Here's an older pic of mine:

Bud's Gunshop is great to buy from too. I have bought a lot of firearms from them. Great folks to deal with and their prices are very good indeed. The only problem with the PLR-16 is that you go thru a lot of .223/5.56mm ammo before you know it. Sure wish .223 was as cheap as .22LR;)

Sorry, I got a new smart phone and it has an anal spell check. I meant CDNN. They had the best price than all the other places. Good place to do business with, just as long as they have the right address to your dealer.

All of the accessories I mentioned are factory. The PLR barrel is threaded and will accept just about any muzzle attachments that fit a 223 Cal AR. I used a standard A2 birdcage flash suppressor. I have read that the kel-tec factory flash suppressor/muzzle brake was designed for the PLR to reduce recoil and tame the flash. Dont know if it is true or not. A coworker had one on his PLR and stated it worked as advertised.

I really liked mine, kind of regret selling it now, but I have a Colt 9mm carbine now. It hit the spot.

Oh, forgot to make mention of something that really impressed me on my Kel-Tec PLR......The trigger. The trigger pull on my particular PLR was about 5-5.5 lb pull and crisp. I wasn't really expecting much from a Kel-Tec as far as the trigger goes, but it was quite nice. Made it real easy to fire rapidly.

That is pure sexiness. I've come to the conclusion i need this gun. What brake is on the gun in the middle m2? I also think it's safe to say you have a problem :)

I had two, sold one when cash was tight. I've had many offers on the other, but won't part with it. I love that critter!

Affordable, but not cheap. I own five, planning to add two more ( RFB and KSG).

Great company, best customer service in the industry.

Affordable, but not cheap.

I would say affordable and affordable for a reason. I own a couple Kel tecs and have owned others. I like them for what the are but if you look at one next to some of the other guns I own it becomes very apparent whey they cost what they do.

best customer service in the industry.

I'm not saying they have poor service but there is no empirical basis to describe them in superlative terms. Anecdotally I have seen longer both more need for their customer service and longer turn around times than with other makes.

This gun will be a fun gun basically.

That is what the PLR is made for. It has a geez wiz factor that makes it fun. The flash and noise will get you looks form others (not all of them will be nice). It is a great range toy.

What brake is on the gun in the middle m2?
It's a Phantom. The other is the Kel Tec.

The Phantom is just a flash hider and it does very well.

Right after the above large flash picture was taken I installed the Phantom and the flash was eliminated.
As my friend said, "I see it but I don't believe it.

The gun is definately fun but.......
no matter what I was armed with I'd hate to go up against someone armed with the PLR, and knew how to use it.

30 powerful rounds in a fast firing, accurate, easy to handle gun can sure ruin your day.:)

55 grain Remington JSP from the Kel Tec compared to a 45ACP Gold Dot.
