Keltec PF9

A year ago I wanted a PF-9 and couldn't find one so I settled for a P-11. It's been reliable from day one except this one won't feed 147 gr. flat nose all the time. It's pretty comfortable (around the house- this is IL) with an Uncle Mike's size 12 IWB. It's only slightly thicker, you get more rounds and they can be found even cheaper than the PF in some places.

Love mine. I have several hundred rounds through it with no malfunctions. I have done nothing to it other than clean it. I carry it every day. I might try another Keltec in another flavor.

Psyshack,

That sir is one of the most comprehensive reports I have read on ANY forum I frequent!!
Good on ya....complete with pictures and targets what more could any one contemplating a PF-9 ask for. I have had mostly the same experience as you I just couldn't express it nearly as well. KEL-TEC makes great guns....gun snobs just hate em because they equal any expensive do dad they paid two or three times for.

More than one gun company has copied a Kel-Tec design. All their "refinements" add is cost...it's ironic when you think that the federal government is partly responsible for the creation of Kel-Tec. The 10 round magazine limit so incensed the owner he decided to design and manufacture a small easily concealable pistol that took full advantage of this government mandated limit.

The fact that many policemen use Kel-Tec pistols as backup is just icing on the cake.
Thanks again psyshack for an honest report,I find your attitude very refreshing.

For the money, you can not go wrong with the PF9...

The latest issue of "GunTest" magazine gave it an "A" rating and the Ruger LC9 a "C" rating and also blasted Ruger for their "COPY CAT" policies. It is a fine carry gun and I like mine.

I like my Keltec PF9, but I don't know if I'm ready to trust my life with it yet. I've put over 100 rounds through it so far and have had 4-5 failures to eject with 3 different shooters. I believe it's from not holding the gun firmly enough but come on. If you don't hold on to that thing as hard as you possibly can it will jam. I also have problems with accidentally pushing the mag release when firing. If I had to bet my life on that gun I would probably die because it would either jam so bad I have to force out the magazine, or I might accidentally release the magazine.

Evan Price- Id like to see pictures of your worked over frame. That squarish back of the frame that engages the web of your hand was a spot that caught me while handling the PF9 too. As I was looking at it I thought, "I bet I could just smooth that corner out a little".

@ Horvath
I've heard there's a break-in period of about 100-200 rounds for the PF9. Stick with it for a bit and see if it doesn't get more reliable. I think you have a legitimate gripe about the mag release though, as I've heard other people say they've activated it by accident.

Thanks for the advice. I plan on putting another 200 rounds or so through it to make sure it's 100% reliable before I carry it. I changed how I grip the gun and I haven't accidentally released the mag since. If I grip the gun as hard as I possibly can it seems to work great, but as soon as I loosen my grip just a little bit I get jams.

I've had my PF9 for 18 months or so. It was a ridiculously good bargain. $279 for an accurate and reliable CCW. I handload, I shoot cheap FMJ as well as my preferred carry load (Critical Defense). I have never had a failure, which frankly surprised me. Couple that with the best CS in the industry. I did add a Hogue Coverall rubber grip over the molded plastic grip; it makes it far more comfortable to shoot well.

I've been wanting a PF9 for some time. The problem though, is actually finding one in stock somewhere. One of my local stores told me the PF9 sells out immediately when they actually can get some in. They just released the Cerakote models in olive drab and desert tan. As soon as I find one in stock somewhere, it may be my first ever online purchase.
