"Cheap. Plastic. Toy Quality."

Why you don't describe the problems you had so others can learn? Please be specific.

What you describe as "plastic" is zytel that is a glass filled polymer used in all sort of modern firearms that is 4 times stronger and also lighter than aluminum.

Keltecs sometimes are finicky but nothing huge and like many other firearms that cost 4 times the keltec and are made somewhere outside the USA.

I see you replied after refreshed. What was keltec's response to the issues?
The barrel nut is adequate for what it needs to do. Some folks had issues with the nut and keltec replied right away.
Keep in mind these are not systems for battle type of use and abuse but they should be pretty reliable.

So 2 out of 20 some posters hate the gun:eek: I can live with that, it's probably better than most I see on here.

I agree friend. They are a toy in my book. If they are not suitable for any type of field work...they are a toy. Others may catalog differently....but me. I wouldn't count on a KelTec for any type of field work.

Sure KelTec sent new parts. And they worked "for a bit"...then broke again. They were nice people. Sent the parts rather quickly. I have never ever had to call the Izhmash factory for parts. Not after hundreds of thousands of rounds through their products.
KelTec? Every damn one of their guns I have ever acquired.

So if you wanna be a gunsmith or are looking for a cheap toy gun to play/plink with....KelTec is your gun.

I have one and love it.
I'm not sure what kind of field work, but if you are talking about combat, it's definitely not the gun you want.
I bought mine last February at a gun show, first one I'd seen in the wild and plunked my cash down.
No regrets, no problems, but then I'm not in the military, and I'm not planning on going to any war zones.
If I was, I'd take an AK.;)

Forgot about all the spec ops guys on here :p I want this gun as a truck gun, just to shoot around. I like the looks of it and the function. Would really like to know the grip width and overal ergonomics.

I love mine...it's never failed on me so far but I've only put 1500 rounds or so down it in the past 3 years I've had it. Like everyone says the sights are the weakest link, but they haven't fallen off mine yet...LOL My son even killed a small button buck last year with it during our youth day hunt. There are a couple of options for quad rails and several front sight options.

The Sarge, I'm curious to know what use you were putting your sub2000 to that caused such frequent breakages ... if nothing else as a caution on what to avoid.

I have one of the original ones using Glock 17 mags and it has been well behaved from the first magazine.
Folded it fits nicely into a very small laptop case with a standard G17 mag, 4 Sherers and a G17. The bag holds a cleaning kit, eyes and ears and a couple of boxes of ammo.

Just a note.... I was watching a Sub 2000 on Gunbroker today, NIB, $325 shipped. I didn't even bid. Someone else did though and won! I have "non-buyers" remorse now.

Shooting hogs. Walking the river bank. Nothing I do not do with any other rifle/carbine.

LOL....shooting hogs is spec ops in your book? Funny you bring up a truck gun as that is what I used it for. KelTec (during the barrel nut fiasco) told me the vibration/bouncing in the truck was causing the problems!

Look....you want a KelTec? Then I am all for it. I just shared my experience with it.

Shooting hogs is special ops...LOL....

My brother had one that fired when the 9mm cartridge was only halfway in the chamber. Apparently he had what should've been a stoppage and didn't realize it, pulled the trigger and the gun fired anyway. The cartridge case was cut cleanly in half with the forward half remaining in the chamber. Obviously the rear half of the case blew out and the gun was damaged beyond use. He returned the gun to Kel Tec and they actually replaced it free of charge. He still has the replacement gun and likes it a lot. I had heard that these guns had a reputation for firing out of battery and his experience seems to corroborate that.

I think every manufacturer has a malfunction sometime somewhere but if those are considered a systemic issue then recalls are mandated.

firing out of battery? I will look into this.
Never heard that but thanks for sharing.

By the one the other day I had a batch of Hornday match 308 win (you know the expensive ones ) blowing up primers left and right.
It is not the rifle, the rifle is new and headspace is dead on.

Hornady wants to see the cases and any ammo I have.

...so just to show that messing up is normal part of every brand's life, big and small, hopefully all of us will be lucky in any incident. Shooting is not usually dangerous

...but it can be.

I picked one up today in the G22 flavor. A LGS had just received a few and I was there. I couldn't resist. I immediately took it out to fire it today (without cleaning or lubricaiton). I shot 100 rounds of mixed ammo today (Winchester Ranger, Winchester PDX, Winchester WB, Federal, all 180gr), all was accurate (only took it to 25 yards) and fired without mishaps.

You do have to get down kinda low on the tube to see the sights and get a good picture, but they aren't that bad for close range. I'm not going to do anything custom with it, just cut some hose as previously advised and cover the tube because it gets very warm when firing a lot.

Next week I am going to take it to a sight in range and fire it from a bench to see it's total accuracy potential.

again, the sights are not great but they are effective. They are too coarse out the box for me but sharpen them out a tad and those sites will give you many head size hits at 100 yards. head side hits and center-mass with open sights from a thing like this?? I think that is very reasonable.
That was my first impression form one of the very first they made and I bought a while back.

I love mine and would reccomend them. they don't have nice triggers, and they don't get better with age. but they are reliable and durable, and capable of reasonable accuracy for what they are. I am currently an Instructor, and former Operator for CRTG and when we evaluate firearms or any other type of equipment, we use the following check-list to narrow the field of possible candidates.
1. is it adiquate for the task?
2. is it affordable to you?
3. is it commonly available?
4. is it easily replacable/reparable?
5. can you operate it safely, effeciently, and effectively?
5.

stillkickin,
very nice list!

I would add...
6- See if you can try one from a friend or at the range and see yourself enjoying this so it doesn't end up at the end of the safe like many others?
7- Do you like it.? Check point 6.

I want a kel tec sub 2000 I think.. I am 100% confident in the company, please do not try to persuade me otherwise. What I need is actual experiences with this carbine, and range reports for accuracy, as well as a price range. Thanks!

PS : I want the Glock model if that makes a difference
Mine works fine ... I like it a lot.

GOOD LUCK finding one though!

I'm an FFL and was on the waiting list at 6 different distributors for these for nearly 2 YEARS. (and STILL AM) I finally bough one RETAIL (yech!) off of gunbroker.

That is ludicrous. On a wait list for 2 years? You'd think Kel Tec would ramp up production with demand like that!

The reason I jumped on mine the other day is because I knew they are hard to come by. Although this place had several 40's in stock. The salesman said the 9mm's disappear by the first weekend they get them.

One observation, after firing 100 rounds through it and cleaning it, this gun gets really dirty really fast!

I had one of the Glock variety with a Glock 33 round mag I gave to my dad. Not because I didn't like it but because I just didn't have a place for it really. Dad loved the thought of having it for home defense. If I were doing it now, I'd probably get the 40 caliber.

I'm not really big on customizing guns, but I love the Sub2000 with the alternate forearm & perhaps a laser sight.

I've been waiting to find one in 9mm that uses Glock mags, seen lots of 9mm that use S&W or Beretta mags or .40S&W that use the Glock mags.

$300 seems the going rate, I'll not hesitite if I see one for this price.
