Killer boxer dog

We had our night kid quit at work so the boss and I are splitting the shift. Last night I got home about midnight, my truck is not quiet and both the dog and cat know the sound distinctly, but either he thought something was a miss because it was so late or for some reason didnt hear it and heard me kicking the snow off my shoes or my keys. Well I open the door and walk in, I had my head down and my collar "popped" because it was snowing and my 14 month old black lab is about 10 feet from the door hunched down, fur up and growling. I stepped back behind the door a little and said his name and he acknowledged it was me. But WOW, talk about scary. He is the most friendly dog and that was the first time I have ever heard him growl, except when he's playing around. So even my goofy, sissy, dopey black lab gets riled.

To keep this open (because I'm a sucker for boxers too,) a dog is a solid foundation and great added layer to any home security plan. Especially when you have to be away from the home. Coming home and hearing your dog on the other side of the door is a good "coast is clear," as no dog will sit there under duress while someone sits on the other side of the door, uninvited. We trained our boxer to bark at the door on command, which is handy for deterring meat salesman. Heck, even the neighbor kids walk around my yard. :)

Yes Boxers are very good dogs and one of the very best of large breeds around small children.
Unfortunately the AKC show set has bred this animals once strong working qualities practically out of existense in America.
The good thing is there are breeders out there that have European imports that do have the working and guardian instints still very much intact.
But at a high cost financially.
You probably will see a completely different personality of dog here compared to most American bred AKC registered Boxers.
As a kid growing up one of my friends dad brought back a brindle boxer from where he was stationed in occupied Germany and what a dog he was.
Certainly different from any other Boxer dog that I saw growing up and they were very popular dogs in the 60's and 70's.

+1 on that. The AKC has destroyed the working qualities of many great breeds by making them more about appearance and less about temperament and performance. That's one of the reasons I prefer American Bulldogs. They are not part of the AKC, and the smaller registries and shows that they are typically involved in are more performance than appearance focused. And they have many of the qualities that folks here so admire in a good boxer.

My cat won't do much if someone comes to the door.. except for hide because he can see a stranger.

I did buy some good steaks from one of those guys in the past though. However, my deep freeze went out like a month later, and about 3/4 of them had to be thrown out. :(

I have a Boxer/Great Pyrenees mix. Everyone thinks he is some type of yellow lab mix. He has a big deep bark that scares the hell out of everyone. I think he could care less if anyone came after me, but if you go near my wife he would rip your arm off. She stole my heart then she stole my dog. There is nothing sacred in this world.
