I am planning to acquire a new 1911-based handgun in 9mm (caliber choice dictated by ammo availability in this part of the world).
The gun is intended primarily for target shooting (relatively informal).
My shorlist so far boils down to a 5¨STI Trojan vs. Kimber Stainless Steel Target II.
Any input or alternative will be most welcome.
Many thanks

I dunno nuthin about STIs but I know that Kimbers frequently have issues.
Replace this, replace that, shoot XXX number of rounds first, etc .etc.

Kimbers need a bit of fluff and buff OOTB and that's disappointing for a pricey pistol.

Buy the Trojan from Dawson Precision, Dave will go over it and make sure everything is good to go.

I would take the STI over a series 2 Kimber any day of the week. Find a series 1 Kimber and the race is a little closer.

I like Kimbers but out of these two I would give the slight edge to the STI.

I've got Kimbers and STIs - I believe the STIs offer better value and generally prefer them.

However, their distribution lags well behind Kimber's and I'd be circumspect suggesting them if a potential buyer couldn't check them both out. I'm just not very comfortable with buying "sight unseen".

Side-by-side, for me, there's no contest. If aesthetics were a bigger issue, that might change.

Had the same question a couple weeks ago. Got an STI

I asked this same question over on the BrianEnos forum. The STI was most recommended, followed by the Springfield.

I ordered a STI Trojan from Brazo's Custom with a magwell and a Brazo's microdot FO sight added. I ended up picking the STI because of the recommendations here & from some IDPA buddies. Local prices left the STI only about $200ish more expensive than the Springfield Loaded.

It's worked out great so far, I only wish that I had paid the extra $70 to Brazo's for the trigger job. The trigger is good as-is, but the pistol would be perfect with a decent trigger job.

Per STIs distribution comments & reputation, I had my STI Trojan in two days with the options installed. Brazo's had it in stock and got the sight & magwell fitted and shipped overnight.

Also, STI now appears to be shipping with an excellent metalform 9mm magazine.
